Fitting cruise to 90hp Octy 1

Featured Replies

I have a 1999 Octy 1, 90hp (AGR) and have this weekend fitted cruise control to it.

I know there are a number of threads relating to cruise (I read them while thinking about doing this) but just thought I'd clarify a few things based on my experience with this particular car.

I bought the kit from VAG for £71.55 plus VAT.  Its listed as for a Golf 1997 - 2003.  Box part number is 1J0 998 527 A.  This contains the stalk (part no. 1J0 953 513 01C), a single loom (part no. 1J0 971 425A) and instructions.

My understanding was that the loom to the ECU on deisel cars is already installed, so the loom I had went from the stalk to the bottom of the connector block below the wipers.

The instructions are pretty good, but a bit confusing as they cover all models of deisel and petrol, but I got the steering wheel off with a 55 Torx, airbag removal was OK (NB - disconnect the battery to prevent accidental detonation, also it stops you getting the airbag light on when you re-assemble)

You need to strip the dash panels off to gain some work room - I took off the panel above the pedals, and the trim panel where the VAGCOM hooks in and where the light switch is located.  You need to pop the light switch out as there is a screw behind it that holds the panel.

This gives good access to the relay block, which is easily removed, and this in turn means you can reach the bottom of the connector block under the wipers.  It also showed that the brake and clutch switches for cruise were fitted and wired in.

Going under the bonnet the wipers need to come off, then the scuttle (as mentioned on this forum it pulls off PERPENDICULAR to the windscreen as it is held in a narrow channel), then wriggle the wiper assembly out.  The connector block housing is then exposed.

You can now release the connector you need - the instructions describe it as a 10 pin black, but mine was in fact 8 pin..  Into this you insert 4 wires - these are on the new loom, and are labels 1,2,3,9, and they go into the connector block at the corresponding numbers.

There is a pink bar that runs across the connector block that holds the pins in, you have you click this out a bit in order the set the pins, then click it back in.

Finally you need a live feed from fuse 5 - I could net get the wire out of the fuse box from fuse 5, so I simply cut it off, soldered the loom wire n and then you can plug it in.  (I spent ages trying to find a single wire plug that was never there, cos I mis-read th instructions at this point)

I then took it to a mate who activated it with his VCDS.  Interestingly he told me that it would not work because early 1999 models had a non-programmeable ECU, indeed there is no indication that it actually worked until you test it on the road.

Sorry its a bit wordy, i wish i had taken pics! Long and short - diesel Octy - can fit cruise!

Cheers

Rob

Begs the question why you didnt buy the kit from Skoda. It's cheaper and has exactly the right instructions in it.

But well done anyhow.

I thought I had read a post here that said that Skoda no longer sold the kit, but I may be mistaken.

(Besides i know where the VAG dealer is! :) )

BEA 300 002 is available, ordered one the other day.

Need to do mine at some point.

In that case good to know its still available.

I need the top intercooler pipe with the MAP sensor in so I may go and see what their price is ( unless anyone has one for sale?)

After a bit of use, any chance you post up what the fuel economy is like with compared without the cruise control?

I've a 90 bhp too.

My dad's old santa fe had cruise control, but it reduced the mpg a lot when you turned it on...

it was a thirsty enough auld B%^&h without it..

under powered freaking petrol engine in somethiing weighing roughly the same as the moon...

anyway, id be interested in doing this if there wasnt a dramatic drop in the economy..

i will certainly do my best, but I have not owned the car long enough to get a stable MPG yet.  It will do almost all motorway miles (about 20k miles a year taking my son to play football in london) but at the moment as he is not back in training yet it is just doing to school run.

At the moment i would say 42mpg around town and maybe 47 motorway (before i fitted the cruise).

To be honest I am puzzled as to why it may pull the MPG down, in general I find cruise tends to improve it marginally cos you are not always bouncing off the throttle, but we shall see.

your before figure look prtty similar to mine, so itl be an interesting comparison.

It might just depend on the system, but in that Santa fe

you could nearly watch the fuel gauge fall with the cruise locked in at normal speeds..

about 60mph... it was terrible..

i dunno why but it felt like it was revving higher to maintain the speed

than if i just had my foot on the pedal and keeping it in the same spot and speed.
