Location of evaporator

Featured Replies

I am beginning to suspect my aircon leak is from my evaporator, or somewhere near there.

Can anyone provide any diagrams of which bit of the dash I need to remove to get to it? I can kind of see the pipes but is it behind the glovebox area or behind the stereo before I dismantle my entire car.

Need it to be leak tested or just get a UV light in there to check.

Having found the odd diagram, this looks like a full dash out job to get to and remove the whole heater matrix/evaporator. Can anyone who has done this confirm?

Think It's dash out mate. Mines in under warranty and the guy said he has to take dash out to get to it so already a cpl of days.

Wow- I reckon I can have the dash out in under 2 hours! Put it this way, I can take the glovebox, centre console and jumbo box and all the gubbins below the steering column as well as the clocks and stereo out in an hour. Admittedly, I have a big pile of parts and screws and a bit of head scratching to get it all back in the right order. There isn't a lot left to remove at that point.

Yep,dash has to come out, when I changed mine over to dual zone took me about 1 1/2 hours just to get at the heater box and another 3 hours swapping it out,oh and its better if you take the battery and tray thingy out too better clearance to the heater and air con pipes.

Pm me your email addy and I will send you some pics of what it should look like,I may have a spare evaporator too,my old one its a 2007 car done 55,000 miles at time.

To change it you need to split the heater box to get the old one out.

Let me know if you need help and I will do my best.

Having seen a diagram, where would you describe the location of the evaporator? Is it up near the pollen filter or nearer the centre of the car.

The reason I ask, is I have got some air con foaming cleaner and a length of tube to apply it.....I'm just trying to work out the best orifice to put the tube in.....the instructions on the can suggest putting the tube in the centre vents inside the car, but I'm not so sure.

Nearer the centre by the looks of it but a bitch to get to

Remove pollen filter and squirt up there with the fan on full blast that should do the trick.

Andy you are correct it is in the middle of the air box.

Thanks fellas. I'll get squirting!

Hi guys,

Looking to do the same evaporator o-rings on my 06 Vrs.

Took the dash out today but that`s the easy job compared to the removal of the aircon unit, as the evaporator seems to be in the most difficult position to get to.

Managed to remove the outside bolts that hold the subframe in place, I`ll try to twist the whole subframe/aircon unit toward the back of the car and hopefully get to the evaporator connections, where the expansion valve connects to the bulk head.

Any guides online? It seems that the workshop-manuals website doesn`t have all the links.

Thanks,

Andrei

p.s. I`ll take some pictures tomorrow for other members that want to do this job.

Hi,

There is one 10mm nut that holds the wiring loom to the airbox on the passenger side, its a bit of a fiddle to get to you need a ratchet spanner to undo it, and when I did mine that little bugger never went back!!, just watch the seal between airbox and bulk head hole, it has a metal ring on it, fit the seal first then the ring, has its own little groove to go in from the engine side.

Take the screws out both sides of the console, these will release the air con unit, cap the coolant ports with something otherwise you will spill coolant in the car.

Anything else just ask.

Trev

Thanks, which console are you referring to? The main frame under the dash?

That's the one the 2 metal panels either side of the airbox, you can see the one on the drivers side in the photo.

Took them out already, I'm struggling a bit with the beam they we're attached to, I  can't find any other screws. How is the box attached to the car?

Right ok, the airbox is attached at the top on the cross member by 2-4 screws I think, its been a long time since I did mine, sorry, I take it you have took all the ducting out?, you should be able to see the bolts at the top of the air box.

If you need another evaporator I still have my old one here.

Trev

That's the last bolts I have to undo I think, hopefully it's only the 2 o-rings, if not I might need another evaporator.

How did you undo the 2 bottom air ducts, they seem to go under the carpet?

Well if you need another I have one here, PM me you address and I will send it to you.

I just lifted the whole airbox and with help of a second person we wiggled it loose, and it went in the same way too.

Trev

When its all out you should have a big hole like this.

Ok, that's nice to see, so I don't have to take the ally beam off, it's just a matter of wiggling it out.

Thanks, I'll let you know tomorrow about the evaporator if needed.

Also, what was wrong with yours, just the o-rings? Or the evaporator?

Nope you can leave the beam in place as I did. Just watch out for sharp edges that's all.

That's ok, I'm back at work tomorrow after having some well earned holiday.

Nothing wrong with it as such, just had single zone AC when it left the factory, changed it to dual zone, better system and no misting of the windows, I could be mist free when raining, get out the car for a few mins, come back, get in and not see a thing due to misting.

Trev

Is the dual zone the climatronic unit?

Can a normal single zone box be retrofitted to do dual?

Or is it a lot different, different flaps inside?

Thanks

That's the one, single zone is climatic and dual zone in climatrinic.

That's what I converted from a climatic to climatronic unit.

It is different as in a lot more flaps and single zone is manual and dual has an ECU to control everything, if you can get one, get it, just make sure you have all the wiring and the sun light sensor that goes in the middle of the dash, if you want to know more let me know.

Trev

Almost out!

The metal frame in the last picture seems to be the hardest one.

Correction: the passenger side is not easy to pull out.

Any screws holding it? It doesn't wanna come out.
