Difference between Amundsen and Columbus

Featured Replies

For the sake of £100, well worth having the Mitsumi connection if you use an iPod, you then get full controllability of the player and it recharges as well. You still retain an SD card slot in the glove box.

I don't know about the amundsen but with my Columbus I just plug in my iPod with a standard USB cable and it charges, has full control including album artwork and all with no lag. What more can the mitsumi connection offer for £100?

You don't need the Mitsumi connection with Columbus, only Amundsen which is why it is not listed as an option with the former. That brings the price difference down by £100. With hindsight I would have paid the extra money and gone for Columbus.

Ah thanks that makes sense. I wasn't told this when ordering as I was considering the cable!

Must admit I'm very happy with the columbus

The Columbus looks a bit better and has some additional functionality but as a navigation unit I dont think it operates much differently to the Amundsen.

I think if you can tolerate the smaller screen and dont mind that one of the SD slots is permanently taken up by the mapping card then its really not a big deal. The Columbus IMHO is overpriced, even as an upgrade for cars already equipped with Amundsen.

Totally agree - didn't stop me ordering it though!  If you compare any built-in unit with the cost of a stand-alone TomTom or such, it's never going to be pretty.  However, it's not as overpriced as some of the Sat Nav systems in other cars... £2k for Pro Nav in a BMW 1 series, for example.

I'm not entirely sold on I-drive, ive tried to use the Pro nav in my Dad's F20 M135i and find it quite confusing and Im a bit of a geek with that kind of thing; overall though the Pro nav with the in-built 3G capability is a fair bit more advanced and sure whilst not worth 2k its probably (by a close margin) a more sophisticated system.

I quite like the Amundsen, its nice to have the in built functionality and it is functional enough; if it hadnt been standard spec on the Elegance though not sure now that i'd spec it; would save a few hundred quid live with the Bolero (which is essentially the same without nav) and buy a good TomTom or Garmin.
