Poor mpg 1.9tdi pd 130bhp

Featured Replies

My egr was completely black when I bought mine spent a whole day takin everything off and cleaning boost pipes intercooler egr that helped with mpg also if the fuel filter looks old change that I noticed 5mpg from that but as stated earlier a bad map will cause bad fuelling but if you know someone with vagcom you can do some logging to see if its been mapped. • It takes 15 miles for they engines to properly heat up does it not?? My egr valve does that and i got told its just water coming out. Nothing to worry about. Its just water and soot coming out. mick.

  • That egr is stinking. I would start there.

How would I know if fuel filter has been changed? I plan to clean egr and possibly inlet manifold.

I have vcds and have done a log yesterday look above

It's mapped. Stock boost is 1.35bar. Your requesting 1.5bar.

You can improve sample rate by logging 1 group at a time.

I no you can improve sample rate but logging one group at a time is time consuming not to mention waste of lots of fuel.

Yes it may be mapped but not sure that's why my fuel economy is so bad. Tuner who did it is a good mapper ect. Plus my economy was bad before it was mapped.

Sounds the same as mine :(. So far I replaced EGR and gaskets.  Coolant temp sensor, fuel temp sensor.  Fuel filter and air filter.  Boost hose seals and Thermostat.  Nothing has brought my mpg back.  Everyone on here was telling me its the cold weather earlier in the year, well its hot now and there is no difference.  It drinks more fuel tha it used to and I only get around 36-40 mpg.  Really ragged me off now.

Have you actually ran a certain amount of litres of fuel logged mileage and worked out mpg manually to make sure your trip comp isn't giving false readings, and sometimes fuel filters look old maybe a bit of rust from memory they aren't that expensive I think I get them about 20 quid might be worth a shot if it saves you 20 quid of fuel this year then at least it kinda pays for itself. I found the motor factor fuel filter I had previously didn't have the best fit. So got a dealer one when it next needed changing. But yeah less than £20

you didn't say it's chipped   so I wouldn't rely on the fuel computer as said before do a brim to brim so you really know what's going on ---  re wing nut do a search on here   http://forums.tdiclub.com

I'm getting about the same mpg only had the car a week thought that was normal but guess not lol it had a new egr the day before I got it anything I should be looking out for??

Have we checked the cambelt timing?

Log group 4 and look at the synchro angle. Should be around 0.

Cambelt was changed a few days ago but mpg was bad before then. I guess will have to check timing using vcds.

Also tyre pressures are all okay. I'm personally thinking it could be the map maybe injecting to much fuel when cruising.

Also going to do a diesel purge this weekend and hopefully clean out egr not sure about doing the inlet thou?

£30 has got me 160miles before trip says zero. That works out around 39mpg.

Mainly 10mile round trip to work with the occasional town journey.

Any sticky rear calipers?

If the caliper was sticking I would hear it. Plus all brakes were recently done discs and pads

Check the tandem pump on the end of the engine.

It's on the right of the engine as you look straight on at it.

This is a very commmon place for fuel leaks (just google "tdi tandem pump leak").

It may have gone un-noticed due to the location etc and the diesel dripping down onto engine and gearbox and evaporating.

If it is leaking it will be from either the black end plate or where it joins the engine.

Mine was spotted by the garage in the midst of gearbox problems.

I fixed it with a new gasket between the engine and pump and some gasket sealer on the end plate (can't buy a new gasket for this one). Was leaking a lot and so wasting lots of fuel.

Phil

Yes good call Phil.  Mine is leaking from said gasket, one which joins with the head.  Could that drastically effect mpg?  and how much did they charge you to replace that gasket?.  Thanks m8.

Don't have any part numbers as just asked the dealer for a new gasket.

Also worth checking is if your call is included in this recall:

If your tandem pump has the black cover then that's the leaky one.

I think it cost me about £10 for the new gasket and some gasket sealer so was a cheap and pretty quick fix. I did the work myself.

Exactly my thought could that affect mpg especially the trip computer readings? Would I not smell diesel if mine was leaking?

It would as the fuel level will be dropping faster than the diesel is actually being used.

I couldn't smell it on mine unless the engine was running from cold and I was under the bonnet. As soon as it was warm it must have evaporated.

Any pictures of the part or a how to guide?

Mine was recalled to have the bolts replaced and is the LUK one.  I questioned Skoda why they could replace the bolts without changing the gasket and they shrugged at me.  Next on the list to do then as I am running out of options, If it fixes my mpg I will be very happy.   I forgot to mention before I replaced the coolant temp sensor also and have new tyres none of which helped.  As the tandem pump is directly related to fueling and as Phil said often overlooked I am optimistic about this one.

Could you not use instant gasket to fix seal failing that. Darkside seem to sell the gaskets

http://www.darksidedevelopments.co.uk/search.php?search_query=Tandem

Depends which one you have.

The gasket is only for between the pump and engine but they don't do one for the end plate.

I used instant gasket stuff on the end plate and replaced the metal gasket between the pump and engine.

No leaks after a couple thousand miles. No idea if it's leaking now as I don't have it anymore.
