Poor mpg 1.9tdi pd 130bhp

Just an update. I did a vcds log of boost and boost seems to be fine so I am not sure if it is a leak as such however one thing that I have noticed is a releasing air pressure sound which occurs straight after turning engine off. Also the egr is seeping so much. I can clean it and with in a day or two it's leaking oil again out of the two vent holes. Another thing should the valve always be closed or should it be open I.e when engine I switched off? Last thing I noticed the bottom boost hose is leaking oil slightly. No turbo whine or police siren noise however I do think the cars boost sound is louder than it should be I.e I hear airy noise more than the actual turbo whistle.

Egr has been mapped out but I still just have this feeling something is just not right.

Even thou the egr is mapped out if egr was faulty to begin with could that potentially cause the above issues.

  • It takes 15 miles for they engines to properly heat up does it not?? My egr valve does that and i got told its just water coming out. Nothing to worry about. Its just water and soot coming out. mick.

  • That egr is stinking. I would start there.

  • My egr was completely black when I bought mine spent a whole day takin everything off and cleaning boost pipes intercooler egr that helped with mpg also if the fuel filter looks old change that I noti

the ASV should close on switching off, after a few seconds it should open       if the egr's stuck mapping it out will NOT cure it     CLEAN IT  :-)

What's the asv? I did clean egr but I'm just wondering why it's still dripping oily substance from the holes? And also if the noise I'm getting is normal?

So Egr should be open when engine is off?

Bukp

ASV is anti shudder valve.

When the engine is shut off the valve closes to stop the air drawing air in and running on a little and therefore shuddering.

The leaky air noise is normal as the valve then opens and the back pressure is released.

Just another update. I took my egr and inlet manifold off the car and I can honestly say it wasn't worth cleaning both had sludge on but literally a covering no build up at all. Car done 145k. I can only assume many the liquimoly has dissolved or help clean inlet somehow?

Anyways blanked off egr and manifold using plates. Also noticed a slight leak from bottom of egr valve where flexi pipe goes from exhaust and side of inlet manifold the gasket had had it from looks of it so had no choice but to instant gasket it all the ori gasket both sides.

Cars back together so will see how car is performing in the next few days

Well, what happened?

I'm getting around 440-460 a tank. Tank size of 45L. That's mainly 70% high speed motorway and 30% town.

  • Author

However I still think I'm leaking boost as the airy noise I hear sounds just to loud. Going to replace seals at bottom hoses and clips

i recently done a brim to brim run and put the same amount of fuel in 49 litres and i had done 555.5 miles with about 100 miles on the trip left. using tesco fuel. but that was averaging 60-70mph daily to work. averaged to 51 mpg.

Thanks Stuart that makes me feel tones better lol. Saying that I only managed 45L and that was venting tank a couple of times

i think i have found the reason my economy hasnt been that great when driving. The pipe from the turbo-intercooler seems to be leaking where the metal pipe joins rubber pipe and you can actually here it

  • Author

are these pipes expensive? or do i just need to replace the gaskets and clips if so any part numbers for these bearing in mind i have a seat ibiza fr 1.9tdi 130bhp

Yes but not quite as expensive as the OEM ones. SFS do a complete bottom pipe replacement - I think, and Forge do a replacement for the 90 degree bend off the turbo.

If it's leaking, check it's not simply the seals on the joints. Though that bend off the turbo has been known to fray/leak.

Do you have part number for the seals? Should I also replace c clips? Or should I simply use zip ties to create a cage and use instant gasket to create a seal?

why don't you phone TPS and then the main dealer and cross reference prices. for TPS say it's for trade. (yourself)

I did £130 all in for pipe from turbo two seals and two clips. The seals and clips are for the intercooler end of the same pipe work.

Ordered it as the pipe from turbo is rattling where the seal has worn down and the seal on that isn't available. Also the other end of that same pipe the lugs where the c clips grab on to are worn causing a fairly big airy noise boost leak. Hopefully be sorted Saturday. Probably going to do oil change as well just a a caution as it's car has been like this since I bought it.

That price for turbo boost pipe, 2x c clips and two seals was from tps with trade price.

This was the pipe causing problems both ends worn. Hopefully this sorts out my mpg issue.

One thing I notice I now have 0% smoke even below 2k and putting foot down

i changed mine as the connecting lugs were shot and i managed to limp to TPS on my birthday and shell out £104 for new 90 degree pipe and new clips and also rubber gloves not to get dirty, so working on my birthday back in april and pipe blowing off every 2 miles, so glad i fixed it.
