Poor mpg 1.9tdi pd 130bhp

Featured Replies

As above I know it's not a skoda vrs but does share same engine. Anyways I have recently bought seat ibiza 1.9tdi 130bhp after selling my octavia vrs 2.0TFSI.

I feel my mpg is considerably lower than others. Very spirited drive I'm getting as low as 22mpg according to trip. And on my 10mile trip to work I get around 43-44mpg sitting at around 65-70mph.Outside temp is around 20c so it's not cold weather. I have vcds so anything I can check before I go changing bits.

Also noticed soot and oil around the egr valve is this normal?

  • That egr is stinking. I would start there.

This is getting pretty frustrating. I did 10miles only averaged 39-40mpg but touch throttle to hard and that drops to like 35mpg. Also noticed my temp gauge needle sits just below 90 is this normal or should it be bang on the middle? .

So after looking online it seems most mpg problems are down to:

Boost leak

Maf

Coolant temp sensor

Egr valve

Also how do I change coolant temp sensor if I need to and how do I remove egr valve? Thanks in advance

first thing first ... when did the car last have a good service

yes the car should run a tad under 90 on the temp gauge

Perhaps a VCDS scan might be worthwhile too.

Well I bought car end of June and last service was in April 2013 which I have receipt for from previous owner.

However it doesn't mention what was changed when it was serviced. Cost £140

What checks should I do using vcds?

a clogged air filter and fuel filter would reduce your mpg .... might be worth lifting the air box lid ... its only 2 screws ...... then move on to the harder , more expensive , and more specialist options

Just checked air filter and it looks brand new so definitely been recently changed

You can check for any stored codes, and then check the operation of the EGR, MAF and coolant temp sensor.

Also don't over look simple explanations. Have a good look around the engine bay and under the car for fuel leaks.....even a small leak will impact on MPG a lot.

Do I need to drive the car to check the egr Maf and coolant sensors or can it be done stationary

I'm sure there's no fuel leak as I'm pretty sure I would smell it.

looks like the egr is faulty   there is a tiny oil seal on the diaphragm /valve stem which is all but imposible to replace,so I guess that's the first job either a new one a delete kit or a "Wingnut stealth" mod if your handy     don't block up those holes where it's leaking or there will be no control and if memory serves it will really run like crap

whats the wingnut stelth mod? So could it be the egr which is causing such low mpg. I just went for a blast now to do some logging and my trip stayed around 17-20mpg driving hard thou.

Your EGR has had it by the looks.

Might even just get away with a clean. If it's not been opening properly for a while it may have just got clogged up. Take off the boost pipe there and have a look.

Might tackle this tomorrow. Is it not worth doing a egr delete using kit. Honest opinions

My car was really bad on fuel turned out to be the most shocking remap ever,my car was sold to me as standard but wasn't..worth checking

agree with bowen, give the EGR a good clean out and clean the pipework out, going to be messy though but worth it.

Ok will give egr a clean. One thing I noticed as that the in the log I did the coolant temp doesn't once get up to 90c . even after ragging it and it being warm outside. It stays around 80c.

Stick a new tep sensor on it for what it costs.
