Golf GTi vs Octavia VRS

Featured Replies

Hi all, just wondering does anybody know where the extra 30bhp comes from in the VRS? I thought the engines were the same in both the Golf and the Octavia. I'd love to know!

Cheers Mike

Bigger turbo for a start.

Later Golfs were the same

The 150BHP Golf has the K03 turbo rather than K03S I think.

But it's mostly software I suspect.

Skoda badges add 20 BHpzzzzzz. True dat ;)

I thought they had different size ports in the heads? I may well be wrong here.

+1 I'd say the mapping too

AUQ engine has the small port head,

The 150s remap up to similar(ish) levels to the 180bho from memory.  So its a bit like having a de-tuned 180?  Not sure if that's necessarily right but it's a hunch.

The k03s 150bhp engines map the same as the 180bhp ones but the k03 150bhp ones only map to 200bhp ish IIRC

It all depends what engine numbers they have, there is alot of differant 20vt engines ranging from 150bhp to 250bhp i believe in the last of line TT's

Think most gti's have the AUM engine where as the vrs has the AUQ engine as does the later anniversary golfs altho i believe the octavia is the only one to use the 5 speed gearbox with the 180 AUQ engine, the rest have the 6 speed

From what i've read scouting about on forums i believe that the AUM engine is the golf is alot stronger as it has bigger rods so can take alot more power than the AUQ engine

Think most of above is right but i stand to be corrected

Hmmm, too much turbo talk, I mean I'm no expert. For the record I meant the MK4 Golf but I think you all already guessed that.

So is the VRS much faster, as power to weight must play some part here.

Standard for standard yes. Noticeably in my experience

I beleave the AUM and AUQ are almost identical the main difference is the mapping of ECU.But I stand to be corrected.

Neither cars are what you would call lightweight i wouldn't think altho there is more weight over the rear end of the vrs,

As for which is fastest no idea but alot depends how you drive them and whats been done as i didn't think the vrs is that fast in standard trim

Suppose it depends what your after out of them really

As already mentioned the mk1 VRS shares it's 1.8T AUQ engine with the mkiv Golf Anniversary. Having owned both cars I can testify to the Anniversary feeling quicker than the VRS. I wouldn't say there's a big difference in straight line performance but the Anniversary certainly handled much better than the VRS.

Yes but the vrs doesn't look like a brick. ;)

This was my Anniversary

Certainly wouldn't agree with the brick description.

I'm a great fan of the VRS, but the Anni was absolutely brilliant, way better than mkiv GTi in every way & I wish I hadn't sold it. :wall:

Yeah, but that's because the mk4 has a shorter wheel base and weighs less so of course it will handle better but the vRS is such a better car, more unique, looks better and your not part of that mk4 scene which is the big plus ;)

Nice looking GTI and vrs.I was only joking about the Golfs.Very good cars just not my cup of tea looks wise.

Golf's have the same wheelbase as the octy, the octy has a longer rear overhang

Giving the massive boot.

Golf's are heavier, model for model than Octavia's

iirc the GTI is about 50Kg heavier than a vRS (which is about 1280Kg iirc)

Golf's have more sound deadening, heavier seats etc

The Golf is a slighter shorter wheelbase and narrower front track

Its not massive though - we're talking cm's (1cm ?)

The 4x4s' have a even wider front track

carsspecifications.com has all that kind of info

Older GTI Golfs have AGU non-DBW engines with K03, bigger head ports and 272cc injectors, no VVT,SAI, N249 and all that crap under the hood. Anny Golfs have AUQ engines that are identical to vrs.

Anni's have many differences to the standard Golf GTi. 180bhp K03s AUQ engine, 6 speed gearbox, stiffer lower suspension, bigger brakes, bigger exhaust, special Recaro seats, 18" BBS CH alloys, black headlining, brushed alluminium interior trim, Golf ball gear nob, front & rear lower valances, side skirts, black headlights, perforated leather steering wheel with ( same as VRS but with red stiching). A total of 1800 cars were made 900 180 bhp petrol  & 900 150bhp Diesel, available in black, silver or red, & only available as a 3 door. I'd owned 2 mkiv Golf red i mkiv's prior to buying the Anni, & the Anni vastly superior. It's like comparing the standard 1.6 Octavia to a VRS.

1375kg. Cant see the GTI being heavier than that.
