Columbus satnav map updates - how much ?!

Featured Replies

I can't remember exactly what model my Garmin is, but it has LMT, Bluetooth and voice control. I actually use the smartphone app for traffic, as I find it's more reliable than the traffic aerial. I think its a cracking unit with beautiful maps, the voice control is excellent and you can dial any name in your phone book without having to set up a voice tag first. I had the Columbus unit in my Superb and, while it was nicely integrated, it wasn't as clever, and it cost a bomb when it broke. So Garmin for me over the built in unit.

Yes, sending a contact from the phone address book to the Garmin was instant and super easy.

BUT to use the traffic on the Smarlink service via Bluetooth on the phone you have to pay £16/year...  wheras the service via the cable is free for life. And I'm unclear as to how the paid for traffic via the phone can be any better than the free one on the nav unit?

  • My TomTom sat nav is 5 years old.  I've never updated the maps.  It gets me to where I want to go in Europe and the UK every single time...  why?  Well the roads have not really changed that much have

One of the best reasons for not having an in-built sat nav!! Garmin or Tom Tom every time!!

Getting back to the title of this discussion (!) Skoda now have a page on their site (http://new.skoda-auto.com/en/experience/service/maps-updating) which takes you to navigation.com where you can download map updates free. However, the Skoda page is headed "Update your maps for the New Octavia" - does this mean that the updates won't work in my Superb 2011 Columbus? Does anyone have experience of updating via this route?

As been discussed in many threads, the free updates are only for the new Columbus currently only fitted in the Mk3 Octavia.

My understanding is that the Skoda 'on line' updates are for Octy III 'integral' satnavs - not for the Yeti (and probably Superb) Columbi.

On the day trip to Croatia road trip, I obtained the current East Europe disc from these people:

Worked a treat and good service from the seller - they even emailed me to make sure I really wanted the East Europe disc seeing as I don't live there!

Just download from here

edit. Link to illegal download removed as we do not allow them on briskoda.

and create your own dvd i got the one with speed cameras and works perfectly

And worked faultlessly in france as well.

So £25 as against £190 ! Is there a catch ? What's the chance of the update bricking the Columbus ?

Very tempted - wonder whether the postcode file gets updated/corrected with updates ? Have others found postcodes missing from the database ?

I only ran the disc (without installing it) whilst on the far side of Europe and it worked seamlessly. The option to load the data was there (as it should) but that would have overwritten the stored (western Europe) data.

Personally, I will keep an eye out for an Western Europe update from the same people and install it. I don't know what form the updates take. On TIBET I an update introduced the full UK postcodes.

Just got V10. Why don't they add speed cameras? I followed the guide on this site but could only get it to load one type of camera per folder so soon ran out of possibilities to add POIs.  Not much use when you travel all over Europe, It's not illegal, except in France and Switzerland, to have this info.
