Congratulations on a winter tyres/wheels thread in the mid July heatwave, you cannot beat a little early prep................ :sun:

.......or of course you could be a Greenland based member..?

Just about ANY FWD car fitted with decent (4mm+) winter tyres will outperform a 4WD car on non suitable road tyres.

Just buy a set of winter wheels and tyres for the vRS.

Why the 4x4?

Just get some winter tyres

Why do you think a 4x4 is going to be the answer to all your needs?

Firstly a 4x4 in slippery conditions, driven by someone who hasn't at least had some training is nothing more than an accidenmt waiting to happen.

Secondly, a 4x4 might have a bit more traction to get going but they are no better and potentially worse downhill due to their often greater weight.

It would be much better to buy a spare set of wheels and winter tyres (and drive sensibly)

Fiat Panda 1.2 with winter tyres cheap as chips

Welllooks like the know it alls and the sceptics are out as usual.

You obviously want to save your pride and joy from damage as well as not getting stuck.

I can see where you are coming from i run a Superb as a company car and I fit winter tyres.

But I also have a Landrover Discovery for the winter which the wife also uses in bad conditions rather than her focus

I paid a grand for it and it came with virtually new M/T tyres on so loads of tread and with a hi and lo box and a Diff lock it is unlikley to get stuck.

I had a Discovery a few years back when we had 2 foot of snow around this area and never got stuck.

At this time of year the 4x4 are not fetching good money so keep your eye out for the bargains.

I would recommend a Landrover as they are quite robust and parts are plentiful and cheap and will take a beating.

Check out the owners fourums and flea bay but try to look at it before you buy.

Get something with plenty of MOT and check everywhere for rust and then look for oil leaks.

Try to avoid anything that has been prepared for off roading as it will most likley have been battered about and to be honest unless you are going to a pay and play site you should never need them.

having driven 2wd and 4wd cars through the snow and only getting stuck due to being snowed in (at work I have to say) its just the extra security of the 4wd that me think of them. I have to say I was being drawn to landys or going back to scoobys again (fun and good in snow)

curleybar...... I suppose it is a tad early but I'm thinking its the cheaper time of year and in case in any work is needed on them, and no I'm from far away Sheffield

unfortunately I dont have any where I can put spare wheels and winter tyres, plus our lass might not like having them lying about

A Fabia vRS is perfectly OK in the snow with the right tyres or even without the right tyres.

Finding storage for wheels like in a 'Storage Unit', maybe £6 a week,  is surely cheaper than another vehicles purchase,

road tax, insurance, up keep and worse fuel consumption.
