skoda fabia classic alternator and power steering problem

Featured Replies

hi there,

i have a 2001 y reg fabia. its got the 1.4 mpi engine and has air con.

almost a year ago when i bought it the power steering died, and shortly after it turned out the culprit was a dead alternator which i had replaced. however at the time the mechanic had a choice of a 70 amp or  a 90 amp model.. he chose 70 amp. well the power steering has rarely worked since. only on long 4/5 hours journeys will it maybe start workign again for a day or so near to the end of it.

i have a mate who works for the aa who has used a battery tester, which passed my battery.

also when the alternator was fitted there was a fault code in the ecu relating to the alternator load level being implausible..... ( which i think could be the cause of my power steering loss and that ive read because i have air con i shoudl have a 90 amp alternator?)

so my question is what alternator do i actually need?

Why not phone a Skoda dealership tomorrow and ask for the parts department.  Tell them your registration number, and ask them to look up what alternator should be fitted to your car?  If they say 90A then you may have found a possible solution to your problem, if they say it came with a 70A alt, then it is likely that the problem isn't the alternator that you have now.
