At what oil temperature in a VRS, or other Fab2, do you back off?

Agreed,it's a non- issue for road use.As with all other water cooled engines,if the water temperature is OK then so will the oil temp...assuming the oil level is not low and the oil is the correct spec,of course.

ah, but the analogue water temp water display on the dash doesnt match that of the VCDS logged water temp!!  I've had my coolant measured at over 120degrees whilst the dash still showed 90degrees!!

OK,I take your point about modern water temp gauges not being accurate, the old ones with capillary tubes were far better.I assume that because of the pressurised system the coolant was still below boiling point?

Lets put it another way, would you agree that in road use you are only going to have concerns about oil temp AFTER your coolant has all disappeared in clouds of steam?

Modern temperature gauges have become nothing more than placebo gauges, sadly..

If it, as modern engines can quite happily do, starts showing 100 or 110 degrees, then the dealers would be overrun by people complaining that their cars are boiling and there's something wrong when in fact there's nothing wrong at all...the boiling point of pure water at atmospheric pressure IS 100 degrees, but not inside the pressurised, additive rich environment of a modern cars cooling system.
