Bolt replacement when renwing timing belt.

Featured Replies

Hi, I was wondering if someone could clarify specifically, which of the right-hand engine mounting bolts need replacing when replacing the timing belt.

Now, there are 2 x M10 bolts holding the mount to the body, 3 x M10 bolts holding the bracket to the engine and 2 x M12 bolts connecting the bracket to the mount. As far as I can tell, from looking at the haynes manual, it is just the 2 bolts connecting the mount to the body that need replacing and they also have a 2-stage tightening sequence. However, the 2 x M12 bolts connecting the bracket to the mount appear to be the 2 bolts most likely to result in the engine dropping in the event of their failure since this connection is the one under tension. The connection between the mount and the body appears atleast to be in compression.

So, does someone have another source of information (say an official Skoda manual) which corroborates the information in the haynes manual or is it possible that haynes have identified the wrong bolts?

Also, of the people that have experienced bolt failure, either directly or otherwise,  which ones were they?

Your thoughts are greatly appreciated.

As I know all bolts with angle tight specification (Nm+degrees) are strech bolts and must be replaced every time

My thoughts are don't bother replacing any.

Suppose it depends how fussy you are though

Sure they come in the kit so why not??

No I don't think they do mate, certainly didn't with mine.

If they come with the kit then yes, but if not I wouldn't bother as I don't think it's at all necessary

My bad didn't read it properly assumed it was pully bolts

It's the one that need angle tightening, you won't get them with the kit.  Buy them from TPS/Dealer they only cost a few quid, do you want to risk one of them failing?
