Difference between 83W and 87W?

Featured Replies

I am getting my tyres fitted tomorrow but the guy where im getting them fitted them at asked me if my tyres were 83W or 87W and I told him 87W by accident :o, does this make any difference? from what I can gather the load-index figure imprinted on the sidewall of the tyre denotes the maximum load capacity of a tyre when driven at maximum speed:

Li kg Li kg

83 = 83 487 112 1120

87 = 87 545 116 1250

Will it make any difference to the fact I have ordered 87W or will I need to specify 83W?

On a side note my car has the Eibach pro-kit on it so I assume there will be more pressure excerted on the tyres so 87W sounds like a good idea :D

I know your car doesn't need one but you can fail an MOT with the wrong weight index.

Would it be safer to say no then and make sure I get the 83W ones?

If the weight index is higher than the 'standard' tyre that came with the car it should be fine. As all it means is the tyre can take a higher weight at the same speed for ten minutes endurance. Changing to a lower load index or speed rating is a problem though.

Thanks, that was kind of what I thought, I couldnt see how it would affect it by having tyres which could cope with more weight at max speed.
