idle curiosity as mot man could not get a reading at 2500 revs but it does work & then put it straight back on

It's not an emissions test on a diesel., it's a smoke test.  The engine is revved to the governed maximum engine speed and if it's 2000 rpm, that's what it gets revved to, the tester should not be messing about with anything in an attempt to get it to rev to a higher speed.

Diesels with DPFs will often not give a smoke reading as the machine will not detect any acceleration and will not produce a report.

When this happens during a test, I'll just write the details on a sheet of paper for our files and advise:

no acceleration detected on smoke test, result 0.00/m, report not generated

The testing station does not have to provide a copy of the smoke test report for the vehicle presenter.

ESP is the vehicles stability program, if it detects a skid it will brake individual wheels to get the car back on track.
