Automatic choke when starting car

Featured Replies

Hi, I have recently bought a skoda octavia vrs on an 04 plate. Generally the car seems sound, however when I start the car from cold the automatic choke kicks in and it idles at around 12-1400 RPM. This would be fair enough, but it like 29 degrees outside so the engine is hardly cold. Could anyone advise me cheers Jack

Welcome aboard.

Fuel injected engines don't have a choke, but some do often idle higher when cold. 29 degrees is still cold in engine terms. As long as it's not idling like that all the time it's not a problem.

Cheers for that. I have friends who have fuel injected engines and they don't seem to have same problem. Does your VRS TSI do this? I realise its a lot newer car than mine. Cheers

Very normal. Injection engines are constantly taking several measurements to maintain the optimum running conditions for the engine and that includes having an increased idle speed whilst the engine is still cold. The computer will be adjusting the oxygen/fuel mixture as well and after a few minutes it'll settle it's self down. Bear in mind that the normal operating temperature of an engine is 90c so no matter where you are in the world, the engine will still be "cold" when first started.

Welcome :)

Welcome.

Hi and welcome aboard.

Welcome aboard. The choke, wether is automatic or manual is a common feature of carburetor engines. The injection engines don't have a choke, but the computer may adjust the running conditions of the engine, sometimes resulting in increased idling speed.
