BMW 740i

Featured Replies

Having looked at everything it breaks my heart but I need to sell the 740i. A new job further away means I just don't have time to enjoy it now and it will end up just rusting away and be a waste. Here is a brief spec but please feel free to ask any questions..

1998 S plate. It's a pre-facelift in Orient Blue Metallic.

Grey leather with heated front electric memory seats.

Sunroof

Telephone, SatNav, aux in in back of centre console

Analogue tv tuner

Heated washers + wiper rest points. Intensive clean option too with headlight washers.

4.4 V8 with around 133k on it.

Runs fine although occasionally it starts, revs drop and you have to restart. Sometimes once, sometimes 3 or 4 times, apparently down to a faulty maf. It doesn't really bother me so I haven't replaced it. Just taxed for 6 months and a years mot too.

Bad points:-

-Starting issue detailed above.

-Pixels on dash have pretty much gone. Again doesn't bother me but the ribbon needs replacing I guess. It's a common fault with this age of BMW. £20 for the ribbon or £80 to have it done by a company if your not feeling adventurous. Plenty of youtube walk throughs.

-The cruise doesn't work. No idea why. It comes on, set, revs sort of drop, light goes off.

-Rust around arches and bottom of drivers door. Not major on the arches but the drivers door bottom edge probably needs attention shortly.

Good points:-

-4.4V8 which runs well

-Auto gearbox with sport and manual changes. Smooth.

-Service history

-All keys. 2 remotes, valet key and plastic key.

-New brake pipe for MOT

-New Bosch S5 battery.

I genuinely love this car but it isn't going to get used enough to warrant me keeping it.

Price:- £1000.

I've been an active member on here for a long time, as you will see from my post count :)

Thanks for looking!

Can you give any guidance on what you consider "the right car"?

I suspect an equilvanet year  LR Discovery TDI is out of the question.....

Great pics of the car plus the Comet and Concorde!! gonna have to visit Duxford now too :)

Slight hi-jack but GLWS

Thanks for the replies guys. I'm not really sure what swaps I'd be interested in. I'm not sure I fancy a disco though. Thanks for the offer though!

OK. So as it hasn't sold I put it in for its MOT. It failed on the following. 2 rear tyres, corroded brake pipe and emissions. Brake pipe done and tyres will be sorted for sale. The emissions apparently are not an issue as the garage say it just needs a good run as its been standing for a while.

Bumpage.

what a lot of motor for not much money........ so tempting but i fear it would bankrupt me on fuel.... shocked it has not sold on evilbay though.

I've really got to move this on now.

It has a years mot and 6 months tax now. New brake pipe for the mot done too. It has also had a brand new Bosch Battery.

I would like £1000 ONO but I'm very happy to consider offers. Also, since the new battery I've only had the starting issue once...

Also open to swaps.

What sort of MPG do you get from such a big engine?

A friend of my son's is a BMW enthusiast, I'll mention this to him

  • Author

Average around 20-25mpg. That's driving it..not pootling about. However if you really push it I have got down to 11ish

Hj chris I had a 750il in green 99mdl with all the nice bits ,amazing car moted and taxed ,, could i sell it 14 months later and another mot and I ended up selling it to a guy for 500 just to take it away , they just have no interest now , the guy I sold mine to said he buys them for a ton now and strips them if they are a facelift version

That's going to cheer him up no end...

  • Author

If only you'd let me know. I'd have bought that 750iL.

That's going to cheer him up no end...

Just thinking that.

Oh dear.

Lot of car that no one seemingly wants.

I'd stache it away somewhere in mothballs for a few years, and then it'll become a classic and worth a lot more...possibly?

All cars eventually become classics with increasing value  regardless of desirabilty.

I've seen some right ole ugly munters that attract a lot of attention at the classic car shows I frequent every summer, mainly because of the rarity brought on by no one wanting them before they became a 'classic' in terms of age..

I hardly use it as it is. I do a 50 mile round trip for work now as opposed to 20 and there's a possibility that might increase to 100miles a day. It's just not me worth keeping her and I'd like to see her go to someone who will give her the tlc and use her rather than to see her shipped to Lithuania and be stripped for parts :(

I know. It's sad mate, especially when you get a bit emotional about a car after you've given her a good home.

I feel similar about my Fabia.

Looked after her for years with tlc, and even though she just sits here most of the time, I just can't bare to see her go and possibly get chaved up. :(

Stupid really, as they're only heaps of metal.

You thought about p/x ing her for a replacement?

Project for Mike Brewer on Wheeler dealers?

I just bought 728i sport "individual" model with all the toys, sport seats, style 32 staggered 18" alloys etc

To do a charity rally to France.

£500 with mot to July '14

Not what you want to hear mate but they are probably at the very very lowest value right now so many being killed off each week for parts. If you can hold onto it for a year or two, the value will go up.
