Does cancelled insurance affect you NCB?

Featured Replies

Hi all, just looking for some advice. As the title says, does having your insurance cancelled affect your no claims? My current insurance company wants to check my NCB history because ive had insurance since 2000 but only have 10 years NCB but im worried that cancelled insurance means you lose your NCB.

The reason why it was cancelled was because of my bank account being hacked and i had to have all my account details changed,The bank said all my direct debits will go out as normal, but guess which one didnt, thats right, my car insurance, thus my account registered with my insurance comapny at the time didnt exist so they couldnt take the money so they cancelled my insurance.

Really stressed about this, can anybody shed any info on this?

Many thanks.

When was your insurance cancelled? You need to contact the cancelling insurers asap and get them to remove this off your record by sending proof from your bank if required. afaik having insurance refused or cancelled is one of the nonos that you have to declare for ever and a day and as a massive weighting on your policy. You won't lose your ncb if you have had no claims but you won't get the extra years ncb for the part year in which your insurance was cancelled. afaik you can go upto 2 years without insurance and still retain your existing ncb.

imo insurers are getting very quick to cancel policies with little or no warning leaving folk unintentionally uninsured, quite a few stories on PH and the like of one email being sent as a warning then bang. Ok I suppose so long as you read your emails or they aren't sent straight to the spam folder with all the rest of the junk insurers send out soliciting business!

If the policy was cancelled then that years no claims wouldnt have been added as the policy wasnt completed. It wouldnt affect affect you're previous yeard NCB though.

Yep, one of the standard questions asked is "have you ever had insurance refused or cancelled".

If you'd said no they may use that as an excuse to avoid paying out on a claim.

As an aside, I wonder what constitutes "refused"?

I once bought a Q plate motorbike and my current insurers wouldn't quote to swap the policy over from the previous bike as they didn't cover Qs at all. As there was only a week left to run I just took out a new policy after it had finished. I wonder if that would count?

Yup you need to declare it for Any insurance (car, home, mobile, credit card, holiday etc etc) you take out, and it will affect your ability to get insurance and load the premiums. Almost any insurance request will get referred to the underwriters.

Did they reinstate the insurance or send you packing? That'll make all the difference.

As above its a big no no, and hiding it will only lead to more cancelled policies and make matters worse for you

Thanks for the advice all. I was just worried that cancelled insurance meant you lose all your no claims.

Have you done a comparison for losing the ncb v declaring the cancelled insurance?

I think the ncb issue is the least of your worries.

Yeah I've done a comparison, the premium doubles from £300 to £600 just declaring the cancelled insurance.
