Featured Replies

HI folks i want to change the oil in my 2011 fabia tsi but should i use engine flush before hand and if so whats a good brand and the best method to use it, i know it will say on the tin how to use it but i wonder if u folks out there have any good tips. Also can uz recommend a good guilty oil for my car .cheers.

Just run your oil warm then drain it, and do not burn yourself.

Others will disagree and suggest some sort of flush.

& Just use oil of the correct grade for the engine from the price point you want to pay.

Good OME Filter and new Sump Plug.

If you was to use engine flush, Wynns is a good brand. Whatever you do, don't buy the cheapest oil because it was simply cheaper. Make sure its the correct grade for your beast.

I agree with George and LGM. But would add, unless you are doing very short trips or can see signs of extremely dirty oil with gunge of some description in it, then a flush is not required. It is important to flush on any turbo charged engine IF there are signs of extreme gunge. This can be the white 'mayo' in the top of the oil filler cap and valve cover area, or any signs of globular oil on the stick when dipped. Just plain black oil is ok. It's doing it's job.

Asda , Tesco  or other supermarket non special name/own branded oils are perfectly fine.

Just get the correct spec for the vehicle.

It is made by the same people that produce 'Good Oils',

Castrol & others come at all different price points.

Stores like 'Home Bargains', have Castrol and the likes on the self.

Oil is important, but after all, the stuff put in at the Factory and Dealership Oil Change services is nothing special, only has a special 'not Cheap' price.

As per above really.

An engine flush is not essential but certainly will do no harm to a unit that is well-maintaned.

Agree with the points on the oil quality i.e. as long as the correct grade is used then there should be no issues. Dealerships tend to (but not always) use a single brand and the factory will have most likely used their own Quantum stuff from new.

The only other point that can be said it to make sure you use a 'fully Synthetic' oil as some oils on the shelf at motor accessory shops will meet the correct VW spec, but can actually be a semi-synthetic oil. While you can use them it's not recommended as they go out of spec really quickly compared to fully syn.

i want to change my oil every 10000 miles so a good quality 5w 30 fully synthetic would do the trick ...????????????

Hi O.C.D.

Yep...just use what the book says. 5-30 is fine and I believe it's the 504/507spec that you need. As george says, there is good choice of oils around but I find VW's Quantum brand is one of the best and very cheap to buy from you dealer. I also buy my oils from Smith & Allan, the biggest Uk oil suppliers to the trade and public online (Ebay). There is free delivery and they sell Shell and other very good brands. My last 5ltrs of 5-30 fully syn 504/507 spec for £23 free deliver too. Price vary from time to time and they have special offers that run periodically too.  Link, as you can see, below. You'll need to search around to find what you want.
