We stayed in Portsmouth on the Thursday night, sailed to Le Havre and stayed near Mayenne (about 50 miles from Le Mans) the night before. French roads and signs are excellent and the drive down was straightforward and quite quick.

We booked tickets and a parking space in December last year to make sure we had a guaranteed spot. Signage through Le Mans to the car parks is brilliant and they have Gendarmes directing traffic at every turn. It took no more than 30 minutes from the outskirts of Le Mans to getting parked up, then a 5 minute walk to the circuit entrance.

We had a cottage booked for the week after (my way of persuading SWMBO to come!) so we went there at about 2am for a sleep then back to the circuit next morning.

To get the full experience it's best to camp, but we didn't fancy roughing it

This is the second time I've been (last time was 1999 with the lads)

Both times have been great experiences. The atmosphere is brilliant and the organisation is excellent. There were 218,000 people there but it still only took 25 minutes to get from the parking space to the motorway.

The only think I'll say is that unless you have a portable radio on you constantly you will have no real idea what's going on in the race. But it's the experience that counts.

Being in the start finish straight the first time the cars all pass is worth the trip alone. Awesome.
