Deleting this, that and the other...confused!

Featured Replies

I am new to the Vrs owning world, had it 2 weeks and love it. Think I bought a good one thanks to this forum! One thing that is confusing me is talk of deleting and removing stuff like the EGR, SAI etc. For a start I really don't know what they are or what they do, and should I be getting rid of them? I'll be leaving my car standard for the next 6 months, but after the next service I will look at a remap, roll bars, cold air intake and hunt for around 230bhp. Any advice would be great! Am willing to try and do work myself, first job is the over running starter motor...

TBH if it's all working leave it alone. It's only when things start to break that I'd look at removing the less necessary stuff

Fair enough, so nothing catastrophic will happen if I leave em alone?

EGR - Exhaust Gas Recirculation

Essentially sucks alittle bit of exhaust gas out of the manifold and send it back through the engine to reduce emissions.

Can get clogged up with soot and oil after a while so can be worth removing it.

The lack of the valve also improves air flow through the system potentially increasing power.

It also means your engine will run more efficiently as it'll always be burning pure air rather than a lower oxgen filled air/exhuast gas mix, giving better conomy and potentially more power.

SAI - Secondary Air Injection

All it does is inject extra air when the engine is cold to make the cat more efficient for the first 60-90 seconds of running.
The SAI tends pump to fail after a few years and removal is cheaper than replacement!

N249

The N249 system allows the ECU to open the diverter valve if it wants to.

The DV is a mechanical system that does the same job, and removing it can smooth out the power delivery, as well as tidying up the engine bay and removing a few more air pipes

Cheers for that PastyBoy, I may look at these things some time soon then. Good to know what everyone is on about now too!

Given the manufacturer originally put it all on there it's highly unlikely that anything catastrophic will happen if you just leave it all well alone.

If that was the case all standard cars would be exploding left right and centre.

No problem helping out though. My Fabia only has an EGR not any of the other petrol turbo engine related bits so i did have to do a search to find what they were.

I've seen SAI in Octavia threads for years and always wondered why people were removing side air intakes  :D

The Octavia doesn't have an EGR.

But repair is easier than either. Just drill the rivets out and put through-bolts in. Simple.
