What sort of automatic transmission does.........

Featured Replies

........a current model Freelander have?

I'm hoping that if I whisper and nobody lets on to the mods, someone, who might have compared the FL with the Yeti, (see, there is Yeti connection) might have had cause to enquire.  I was speaking with someone yesterday who has one and is quite happy with it (she uses it to tow a horsebox sometimes and says it's OK for her and it hasn't gone wrong).  She didn't know anything about what sort of box it was, except that it goes forward in D and backwards in R but did say she could hold certain gears if needed?  I suspect Freelanders have Hill Descent as standard ???

I did have a look on a Landrover forum and mention was made of a torque converter box (Jatco???).

(BTW... Llanigraham, you were rather bad tempered in some of your replies on there, you know) :|

The LR website, understandably, doesn't give much detail about the innards of the transmission.  It says:  "A six-speed automatic transmission with CommandShift® provides all the advantages of an automatic transmission and also allows the driver to make manual sequential changes, and Sport mode offers even livelier performance"

Am sure someone will know........thanks, ....but keep your voice down :-)

It is a traditional auto with 'tiptronic' from the sound of it. LR don't have DSG if that's what you mean.

The Disco 4 has a 9 speed auto which is excellent. Along with the high/low box gives it 18 forward gears, as many as some mountain bikes

Yes, thanks for that.  I did initially wonder, when she said she can change up and down manually, whether it was some sort of DSG but would, I think, have expected a more "traditional" sort of box.  Certainly didn't know about the Disco's 18 speed box!

I test drove one today......it has a torque converter box.

Feels very 'Land Rover' to drive.

I believe the Evoke feels much more car like. Not tested one yet.

I would be interested if you were to expand just a bit about your drive by way of comparison with the Yeti.  Was the one you drove an auto?  Would it be right to think most would go for a diesel Freelander, do you think, given the extra bulk?  TBH, it's 4500mm long so I'd have to re-order my garage to make it fit and probably wouldn't go for one but I can't help glancing at them...I think it's the boxy shape i like. Am starting to think I'll get the two yr. warranty for mine and keep it as it's so suitable for us and I still  love the colour and don't need leather seats so to swap it for a facelift Elegance in the same colour isn't going to achieve much.

An SD4......which by definition is an auto. They do not do a petrol FL2 anymore.

It is about a foot longer than the Yeti, and taller. I enjoyed the drive, and the SD4 (190bhp) didn't seem fast, but it was surprisingly brisk.

I'm also considering the FL1 BMW diesel auto HSE from 2004-2006.
