Best way to strip lacquer off on my audi tt comp wheels.!

Featured Replies

Hi guy's I've got some factory polished audi TT comp's for my fabia VRS but I've dissided to mirror polish them but I'm having trouble stripping the lacquer off of them. I've try using nitromors which I have done in the past with painted wheels but it doesn't seem to be touching these wheels..!

Has anyone had a simular problem or has got any other ideas??

Thanks from Ryan : )

You do understand 'metallurgy' i hope, & that once you have stripped the protective coating that you will then need after further polishing,

to re apply a protective coating to these wheels.

The type of wheels you are doing may need more than just wheel waxes or sealer,

but hopefully someone with experience of these particular wheels will be along.

They may just deteriorate very quickly if left as the bare alloy, and not lacquered. Even with Alloy wheel Sealer Applied.

Exposure to Oxygen and H20 will probably have you needing to be baby sitting them almost daily & pampering

but if you are only using them for shows etc, they do look good bare butt naked.

Thanks George.!! Yeah there just show wheels/summer wheels .! So I wanting them looking there best with a mirror polish finish for edition 38. I've got a bad ass polishing kit for them . But I'm struggling like mad trying to get the clear coat off.

I've used nitromors before on wheels and the reaction is near enough instant on painted ones.

But it ain't coming as easy as I thought with the comp's.!

I've started one now "wish I hadn't" so just gotta keep soldiering on lol.

Dam you audi with your high end lacquer !!

Or is it clear powder coat does anyone know???

Thanks for your input guy's keep it coming : )

Ryan

Their (VAG specified) Coatings are not that High End on all wheels, but some work and some are cr4p.

Example of Cr4p is the Dark Chrome Gigaro that suffer 'White Spide' corrosion under the Lacquer Coating.

(Commonly being replaced under Warranty, and yet Skoda still sometimes try to argue with Owners there was wheel damage were they know it is a Porous Coating and a manufacturing fault.)

I suggest that you do go get the coating blasted off, by a professional, or at least go locally and get a price for it.

eg

Are you sure there is any lacquer there and you are just looking at the bare polished wheels?

I was hoping for a picture of which wheels it is.

Not my wheels, picture pinched from the Bay, which has about 4 styles all selling as Audi TT Comp wheels.

Hi guys sorry been out all day. I've nearly taken lacquer off one of the wheels buy putting nitromors on and then by putting cling film on top.!! It has made it a little bit easier and it's lifted the lacquer off quite abit more.!!

But I've source a local place that will acid dip them for £10 a wheel which I thinks a good price!

Yeap their my wheels George.!! When I get home I'll take a picture of them for you.!

Thanks Ryan

Mega jealous I really fancy these as my next set of wheels.

This will sound like a stupid question to many but if I were to buy a set that have been sprayed or a bit kerbed will they still be able to be refurbed back to this condition?

I'd be snapping your hand off but I go on holiday the week after, need spends. If you still have them September time I'll certainly be interested!

No worries pal I should still have them just give me a tinkle on here and I'll let you know if I've still got them.!!

I'm after a nice set of splits for next year or a set of them 3sdm wheel's I think there pretty sweet at the moment. : )

Hey,

I've moved onto my second wheel now first ones looking good now all the lacquers been removed.!

Top tip for anyone who is going to nitromors there wheels to remove paint or lacquer. :

Use cling film and lay it over wheel once you have covered it in nitromors.! I would say it work's ten time better than just applying nitromors on its own.!!

You could rub them with a fine sand paper first to break the surface this will let the stripper get to work faster.

Yeah that's what I did, I rubbed it down first then it took about 5 coats of nitromors but the lacquer has been super tough but putting cling film on and leaving it over night and it came off loads easier.!! It's a bit disheartening thinking I've got to repeat it all over again on another four wheels lol : )

Depends, because if they have seen filler etc then the answer would be no. They are nice wheels I bought some recently but sold them on.
