Featured Replies

Last night I got permission from the CEO (aka, SWMBO) to buy a Blaupunkt DXR52 single din satellite navigation HU. So I'm just doing the rounds at all the ICE shops and they seem to go for

If the only radio you listen to is FM, you can get the cheaper adapter which doesn't include the active antenna. Only about a fiver saved, but if you never listen to the radio it's a waste of a fiver... ;)

Yes, the adapter does convert the Skoda connector into ISO format, which "all" aftermarket HUs use...

Uh-huh...and I got an MP3 changer because that's all they had, much as I would've liked a normal CD one... ;)

Is that because she can't read a map? ;)

  • Author

No, its because I whinged long and hard after I got lost on the way to the pod and on the way back from the pod last weekend ;). What can I say? I can't drive and read a map :D

Q,

you know it's never good to whinge to a SWMBO; they've got looooooong memories.

You having use reasoning...for instance I reasoned with SWMBO that a remap was purely for improving response to get over the initial turbo lag and that it would also improve mpg (;) ). I also said I wasn't for speeding around as any fool can drive around at top speed.

Well what do you know.........I'm a fool.;):D

Q - did you not get "Then don't go to the Pod!"...? :D

Skodi - yeah, know about the speeding one, spent a good while trying to justify why a Road Angel was needed if I didn't exceed the limit ever... ;)

Rob.

Rob,

I'm using the fixed speeding cameras on M25 for Road Angel purchase.;)

Also the mobile units are now very much in operation in Basingstoke so that helps to.

Cheers.

Adrian.

And how does a Road Angel pick up mobile units?

cos it has built in laser detection nick.

as does snooper s6neo and roadpilot and origin b2

Yeah has the lazer detector but I wasn't going get all technical with my reasoning...........SWMBO can see the mobile unit and the detector's a......detector, right?;)

Learnt the hard way of never offering too much information to SWMBO.

Yippie, just ordered it from Bluespot, along with the VW adapter and an AUX-IN adapter. Hopefully it will arrive before the weekend.

I thought that those-in-the-know said that Laser detectors are a waste of time as the beam is so narrow that by the time it registers anything, you are nicked ? Unlike radar where its spread and you have some time to react ?

I'd be tempted by a Laser diffuser / jammer if they weren't illegal or detectable by the plod.

Yeah, though I don't bother using mine, as I figure if it can pick up a mobile unit than the mobile unit has already picked up me. Besides which, for the sort of speeds I do on the motorway I think I'd have to be really unlucky to get stopped by a patrol - my main fear is not seeing Gatsos when I'm looking for places, which the Road Angel deals with very well. And also SPECS...

Rob.

Just being Devil's Advocate, as usual :p Been done by laser myself, at night, from a distance of something like half a mile. Don't believe all the detectors in the world would have saved me. And that's the only time, and I intend to keep it that way if at all possible.

A diffuser would work but their illegal.

However Plod would have to catching you using it and I think the only way they can detect one being used if they're equipment is constantly giving errorneous readings....one or two errors would be ok though, supposedly.

I think you're quite right - probably the best you would get from a detector is being told you were being done while they were doing you (sounds like a film "plot"... ;) )...

Think the risk of running a diffuser is only worth it if you drive at brain-curdling speeds.

Rob.

And if you drive past Plod at brain-curdling speed they're going to put their laser gun away and give chase - same result in the end ...

Depends on the capabilities of the car - sometimes they won't bother if they could get seriously outstripped... :D

Rob.

the diffuser isnot detectable.. but if you take the **** and fly by regularly they can inspect the car and find it....

After a long wait (and theoratically, if it is up to the courier to deliver it I will probably wait until hell freezes over, but thats a different story) I finally received the Blaupunkt DXR52B, VW wiring adapter and AUX-IN cable from the folks from Blue Spot.

Plugged it all in, followed the installation instructions to calibrate the HU. Failed to install :(

Removed everything again and had a close look at the VW wiring adapter. Well what do you know... It does a great job of swapping power cables around, but the GALA wire is non-existent! No wonder it isn't able to detect my vehicle speed! :(

So, to bring it back to subject. Does anyone know of a different kind of adapter I can use?

Oh, and the AUX-IN connector is virtually useless as well as the HU hasn't got any pins for the connector on it. Not very good of Blue Spot to supply this along with it...

Q use the standard loom but snip the k wire and tape it up... you can always use a block connector if u want to go back to std..

as for the aux in... there is 2 versions of the connector make sure they have not sent the wrong one

Thanks Paul, I'll first give Blue Spot a chance to help me out, otherwise I might just do that.

As for the AUX-IN, the radio itself has no pins to connect to, which makes this version completely useless. The other version comes in place of a CD changer (which is incidentally the version I ordered, but after Blue Spot adviced me to get the other (this) version I changed my mind... doh!).

I'm now also in search of the reversing light wire. Anybody know where I could find that (except for in the boot) in close proximity of the HU?
