I presume it is used for determining the direction of the car instead of the speed.

But why does the HU need to know which direction it's going in if it works off GPS?!

Because GPS only gives you speed, not vehicle direction (I could be driving the whole route in reverse ;)). Not sure how critical it is, but the HU takes the wire, so thats what I'm trying to give it.

Hmm...both the Road Angel and Origin Blue use GPS *and* can tell what direction you're in!

Of course if you were driving in reverse and facing backwards it would confuse the left and right... ;)

Now that might just be the reason then. If it knows you're in reverse it will swap the directions given... i guess... :D

Well, when you get it working, give it a try and let us know... :D

Have just been on the phone with Blaupunkt tech-help and the guy told me that it can be put to ground too if I cant find my reversing light wire. Would have no detrimental effect on the navigation. So the plot thickens... :)

Unless it doesn't use the reversing light wire for navigation, but they know for a fact every car will have one, and it would be ground - maybe they're just making the instructions simpler than saying "find a good earthing point"... :D

It must serve a purpose though. When you install the HU for the first time you follow this guided set-up. The first step is finding some satellites to get GPS data from, then it checks if it finds a switched power source (so it can power on/off with the ignition), and then it asks you to put the vehicle in reverse. This step will ofcourse fail if it is hooked up to ground, but at least it will allow you to continue the set-up by calibrating the speed, distance, etc.

I reckon it just plays your CDs backwards when you engage reverse.

worship satan, worship satan.....

:D

Hmm...maybe it just has a little "R" on the display that shows up when you reverse? :D

LOL. That would do me fine... a useless icon on the display :D

Today I was able to install the unit again, this time with a wire connecting the GALA into the HU, and it works! So I've not connected the reverse light wire, but as Blaupunkt UK says, it doesnt matter too much.

First impressions? It's a nice pleasant woman's voice, it doesn't do double roundabouts very well (but in fairness, who does?), it does tell you when you're going the wrong direction as soon as you've missed a turn and then tells you where to turn. Tomorrow I'll be taking it on a bit of a longer challenge, but I'm impressed so far. For

Q

How easy is it to select your destination ?,some of these things you could actually walk there quicker :D

Quinten how much would you be looking for, for the headunit and changer?

Dave: You select 'city' or 'special destination' (which includes things like tourist attractions, etc), then you are able to enter the (lets go for that example) the city name letter by letter. Once you go to the next letter in the word it will narrow down the number of letters you can pick from to the ones it actually has in its database. Once you have 3 or 4 letters you can press 'ok' and it will then offer a list of names to choose from. After you've chosen the city you can then choose from again a few options like 'centre', 'streetname' and 'special destination' (like postoffice, parking, etc). It gets a bit of getting used to, but once you get the hang of selecting the letters it's not too bad.

Today we went out for a longer stretch, and it was spot on delivering us to our chosen destination. On the way back we picked a different way back and halfway through we decided to set the satnav to home. It calculates the route whilst you drive and we were on our way after a few minutes (it is very hard to program it whilst driving ;)). After a while we came accross a road block due to a traffic accident so we had to take a different road. In that case you can tell the sat-nav that you come accross 'traffic' and it calculates a detour. And that worked fine too!

Tomorrow we will give it a final test (we're going to a place we've never been before), but I think it was

Q - that sound's great,but er what does it sound like ?

  • Author

Uhm, good question :D. I've only had it on the radio, and nothing loud as I'm with the family, so I honestly can't comment on the quality of that aspect. It does have an equaliser which allows you to modify the sound to your liking, so I presume it will be reasonably well. I'm not one of the nts nts nts types anyways, so I won't know the difference between the Symphony or the Blaupunkt anyways. I purely got it to have sat-nav in the car.

There was a fairy called nuff !

:D

Got to say I like Bluapunkt -- the first CD autochanger & head unit combo I had was BP -- a Bremen head unit -- that was a fantastic peice of kit, wish I still had it.

And the jury is out... Amazing value for money this HU ! It guided us all the way to our destination and back, didn't make me miss any turns, exits or roundabouts and announced early enough when to expect a change of direction. For me it was

Do you have any pictures, Q?

I'm sure they are somewhere in your gallery, but can't find them. Perhaps my brain needs sat-nav too... :D

Q turn it up a little you will know the diff!:D

Mattijs, yes I have pictures, but hadn't put them online yet :D. Was going to write a review for the review section tonight.

Paul, the tweeters will give in way before it gets loud ;)
