finding oil in France

Featured Replies

Can anybody suggest where to find 503 00 or 504 00 spec oil in France please?

Supermarkets seem to carry quite a good range, but most are for diesels and none to date have had any VW spec at all.

The handbook gives dire warnings about putting more than half a litre of 502 00 in and only in exceptional circumstances. Would this really matter if it was really the only thing you could get your hands on?

Hi, I have just come back from 2 weeks in France, although I take some with me as well for top up purposes and I like to use Millers I saw plenty of oil to 504/507 spec in garages.  Mobil and Total oils are very widespread, the local Carrefour and Super U spermarkes had oil to the correct spec as well.  I hope you find some.  As Metblackrat has suggested, just find a Skoda dealer of which I didn't find many if I am honest or just find the closest VW/Audi garage.

Thanks for the suggestions.

I put the last of my 4 litre container in before we left to bring the level up to max.

It seems to have developed a taste for oil in the week we have been here. Usually takes a good while to drop the level significantly. I've used half a dipstick worth in 600 miles! Must be the steady motorway cruising that does it.

Thats a bit of a worry.....i went across to Poland in my vRS and only seemed to used less than half a litre (3000 miles round trip motorway most of it)....Half a distick's worth maybe needs checking into and fast....

Any vw , audi, seat or Skoda dealer

Norauto, big hypermarket, any vag dealer.

Skoda dealers seem to lurk in the strip malls outside towns - your handbook should have a list?

Any oil spots after being parked?

Mine threw a low oil warning light while blatting up from Port Vendre a couple of years back.  Stopped immediately, the level on the stick was about 1/3 from the lower mark.  The nearest m'way services had the oil, but at platinium prices.  As there was still sufficient oil in there, I continued to our next destination, albeit slower and more enjoyably on D roads.

The local supermarket in Apt, itself not a big town, had more types of oil than you could shake a stick at.  I bought the correct grade Motul because I had heard of the brand and it was a much more reasonable price.  A top up and little more was used during the trip.  I still wonder if the service the week before departure, was a bit short, oil wise.

Any oil is better than no oil.

I would have thought a Diesel oil would do in extremis.  It has higher detergent and higher load bearing capacity, so unlikely to "fail" catastrophically. PD oil has EP additives for the small cam lobe area, and is thin as milk.  Smaller oilways requiring lower viscosity in modern engines is one of the reasons for the dedicated oil.  The economics for VAG wouldn't have anything to do with it, surely?

No spots, no smoke - just a sudden thirst for the stuff.

Out today so will keep an eye out for somewhere. Have already tried Super U and Intermarche without success.
