can I increase the memory on my iphone 5 ?

Featured Replies

as title, thanks! (its a 16gig)

Not easily, apple don't like that, they want you to buy the 32 or 64 Gb versions.

Only way would be to open it up and replace components with those from the bigger versions. It will be easier and cheaper to just upgrade to a bigger Iphone.

only other platforms allow you to do this - look for a phone that allows you to insert a memory card

thanks peeps , thought as much!

Have you thought about NAS storage?

I have a 2TB Synology enclosure and can access all the files stored on it from my iPhone. Great way of storing all your files and accessing them from any device, anywhere.

Just another angle to look at :)

Of course you can!!

You see that little indent used to hang a small toy from (as required by all Japanese school girls)??.

Just tie a piece of string to it and add knots when you need to remember something!!

Job done!! You have more memory!!!

One of the reasons I didn't buy Apple - I don't know what my storage requirements are going to be in 2 years so I bought a phone I can expand with a memory card at <£25 for 32GB.

And no data allowance used for accessing it whenever I want to.

Currently sitting with 16GB memory on the phone and 16GB memory card with approx 20GB in total used. If I had had an Iphone, I would have needed to replace it at quite a high cost per GB :wall:

Problem is that my experience with Android handsets is that unlike the iPhone there are 3 different pools of memory.  A small amount that the phone uses as actual RAM, a small amount of storage (a bit like a C-drive) and then what ever is added by SD car (or is built in in higher market phones like the S3 or 4).  These are all handled differently and can cause problems with some apps etc.  Apple works much better, adn the truth is if you are going to use the phone as a medica player you should pay and get the 32 or 64GB version.  The 16GB is fine for people just wanting to use email and the web plus phone functions.

Apple however badly overcharge for the extra storage (ie a 64GB iPhone must make them a lot more profit than a 16GB because the extra prices is many many times more than the cost to include the extea 48GB of flash storage).  I hope that with iPhone 5S or 6 they will drop 16GB and have 32GB as the starting option as this gives plenty of storage for most users.

This was true 2 years ago, but most android phones have a large 8-32gb memory + SD card slot.

Even the wife's cheap HTC Desire C had this! And that was £90 PAyG

Apple would probably want you to use their Cloud service. Not really what you're after though.

I think my wife paid less than £40 for her Desire C on PAYG...

A few years ago perhaps, but as mentioned above that's not the way it is anymore - Samsung are one of the few that still support expandable storage, their phones usually have a large amount of internal storage (8-16GB) and then the expandable memory on top of that.  In actual use, the software automatically combines all the sources so it doesn't matter if the files are on the external storage or internal, they're all shown as one.  I just use the onboard memory for application installs and general use then put the larger media on the SD card.  It's also handy being able to directly manage the memory card any way I want as I can mount the card as a standard file system.

I did want to use my phone as a media player but don't see why I should pay vastly inflated prices from the manufacturer, an Iphone 5 16GB costs £529 and the Iphone 64GB costs £699 so that's a ridiculous £170 to get 48GB extra memory.  To put that into perspective, a 64GB micro SDHC card costs just £40 so you could buy four 64GB cards with change to spare for the price difference on an Iphone.  Furthermore, if my phone dies I can take the card out and recover data on another machine or if I want to view the media on a different device it's easily done.  If you prefer limited functionality, no recovery and paying vastly over the odds for memory then yes, the Apple way is better but I'll be sticking with the method that's far cheaper, gives more capacity, flexibility, control and recovery.  My phone is just approaching two years old yet still has more memory than a top of the range Iphone.
