grandson , just picked up a 1.4 tdi Polo , 03 reg , with 45k miles . My question as not seen service book does this have a CHAIN or Cam Belt , need to get it checked out as we do not know if or when 1 has been done , other than cosmetics it looks fine and was service within the last 12 months  ( That could be just oil though ) , so going to do a service run through with him on all the basics . I believe the 1.4TDI is Belt driven

it is a belt, in fact iirc it is the same belt kit for the 1.9 tdi PD

OK thanks for the input , need to get hold of service record to see when it was last done , the rest of service bits are similar to my  1.9 diesel octy . We defo know the miles are corrct as it was from an elderly relative . And MOT till april 2014 .

Yes it has a belt, it's exactly the same setup as the 1.9 pd engines except the timing marks are in a different place, the engine does also have an internal chain which runs the balancer shaft but that's a lifetime fit maintenance free.
