New turbo?

Recommended Posts

Last Monday car went in to limp mode - 'Emissions workshop' Fault code shown was 'low inlet manifold pressure' Inlet manifold sensor replaced - made no difference; today had a vacuum valve block on right hand side of bulkhead replaced - also made no difference. Local Indy VW people are looking into cost of replacement turbo - should we be looking at anything less expensive?

VP44 was o/hauled in Feb this year; turbo recently developed a rise and fall whistle - now largely absent since this happened. Car will struggle to 60mph on the flat, 70 downhill. Uphill - don't ask!

Any thoughts welcome...............

I had severe power loss when fuel filter o-ring was pulling air into the system!  Drove like that for 6 miles, straight into a workshop where a new fuel filter rectified the problem.  That was 12k miles ago.

Check for intercooler/pipes loose/cracked/breached.

Mileage?  2.5 tdi turbos last a very long time!  Mine is tuned and still on original at nearly 120k miles.  But, driving at steady speed at all times (say 70 mph cc) has been known to lead to stuck VNT vanes on these so make sure it's all freed up.

Thanks for your thoughts. Mileage is now 123k. I have done a lot of m/way miles with the cruise control on - at c70mph...............

The turbo vanes would seem to be a likely cause. Can you get to the control lever from the 'mushroom' on top of the turbo? All of the pipes and connections have ben checked for leaks

Thanks for your comments. Just to draw a line under this topic - got the car back at the w/end - with new turbo. The vanes on the original were to knackered to even think about cleaning. The GSF replacement should see the car out now..........

Just to add insult to injury the immobiliser got involved somewhere and had a hissy fit and wouldn't let the engine run after starting. Had to leave it in the garage overnight with the key in to let it sort itself out.

Now all sweetness and light again :sun:
