Calculating MPG

Featured Replies

I have been reading some claims of 500+ miles per tank and starting to wonder if im doing it correctly as I am nowhere near that amount as im sure some people do it when the tank has nearly fun dry.

I fill up the car and then take note of the mileage once the red light comes on.

I use http://www.fuel-economy.co.uk/calc.shtml to calculate MPG and the best I have had since I bought it a month ago is 45.4 MPG. Roughly 390 a tank.

My daily commute is 19 miles each way. 6 miles road 13 motorway. x 2 per day.

I drive at 70 on the motorway and partial to the odd overtaking.

I have a 54 plate with 80,000 on the clock and full service history remapped to stage 1.

Was expecting this titanic cash saver driving at whatever speed I like (within reason) but now wondering if I need to drive at 55mph and all motorway to get the amounts im seeing claimed.

The 500 miles per tank claims are more than likely with the expansion space filled. Mine would only do 380 - 400 miles before I found out about it, not I can get about 550 - 600 miles from a tank.

It's part the expansion space and part knowing how to be economical where and when I can be :)

Sorry, have I missed what model it is that you're running? I can't see it on this app I'm using. If it's a diesel you should be getting more than that. Either you have a mechanical fault or you're just not driving smoothly enough. I'm pretty well trained to hyper-mile if I want to, and if me and my gf both drive my vRS on the same trip at the same time of day over a handful of miles through town, our average speeds will be identical but I'll usually get at least 8-10mpg more. Obviously I can't comment on your driving; you might be awesomely efficient for all I know! But it's always worth reading up on a few eco-driving tips to see whether you can make any improvements.

I put £40 in mine the other day and did 403 mile worked out at 61 mpg that was doing 72 mph with the cruise control .. Obviously stopping at roundabouts as stuff from grimsby to drayton manor and back ad a bit of town driving .. Mine drinks fuel until car is warm and plodding round town but always get about 42 mpg if driving round town (once warm) but on long runs the car is fantastic .. On a normal tank would easy get 550-600 and don't no if I filled expansion tank !! I never drive that far continuously

i'd say 45.4 is a tad low on a Vrs. My normal in town MPG on the ecu is around 50 + and better if I do a tank to tank fill . And that's on little bro . Mind you in town, I do have some Fusties and Pugs get funny and a touch of turbo works wonders. Boy wonders see my Furby as an old mans car driven by an old bloke ,but don't realise that this old bloke can /will see them off easily . I'm tempted to get her upped to 100bhp and see what happens.

Mine has done 46.30mpg over the last 53709 miles. It is driven relatively gently on lots of longish runs.

I use the same calculator, i'd say its right. My last tank was 411 miles worked out about 47mpg. This was a trip to legoland 130ish miles at 80mph+ with 2 days of queing to get out of the car park for over an hour with the engine running, then back home with the first third of the journey 85mph+ and then I tried to eek out the economy by driving carefully and watching the computer.
