Having recently purchased another mk1 and not having much  hair to style, or any style at all really, and not at all being gay ( ask my boyfriend ) much, I resemble that remark.

there, I think that clarified things..........a bit.

The main thing that I have against MX5 (mk1 anyway) is that I find the cockpit to be inhibitingly narrow, as in so narrow that my right wrist and elbow rub on the door skin so I feel i can't steer properly.

Roof down. windows down, elbows on the doortops waving gaily at other motorists in the rain. Sorted!

I never found the MX5 too tight (once I was actually in the thing....) and I am 6 foot.

I really enjoyed driving it too.  Very buzzy motor, RWD, 130hp, light car = lots of fun.

I'm 6'1" and find my Mrs 02 MX-5 (Facelift Mark 2) sport a bit tight in the drivers seat. The wheel isn't quite in my lap but my left knee is jammed on the centre console and my right is jammed on the door. That is with the seat back as far as it will go.

Still, it is a great Chassis that needs more power - but she won't be convinced to add a Turbo or S/C conversion to it  :wall:

She has had it from new and apart from normal servicing all that has gone wrong is a number plate bulb (all the others are the originals that it left the factory with). Had the recall where they changed the clutch due to material issues, but it didn't fail or anything.

I'd go as far as saying that it is pretty bullet proof.

Overdue it's second cambelt - but even that it fairly straightforward to do - and if it does go - it is an non-intrusive engine design anyway (what can't they all be like that ?)

I'm 6'1 and I'm the same. Couldn't get comfy in a newer one. and my knees seemed to be round the wheel. Would love a go though.

I got rid of my supercharged MX5 for an Octy vRS - worst mistake ive ever made.

Much prefer the MK3 MR2 Roadster. Faster, handling is far superior and has none of the rust issues. Lots of tuning scope too. If they'd put more effort into the MX5 my choice could be different

Apart from the fact the engines tend to eat themselves before the chassis has time to rust :D

I srsly looked at a few mr2's but decided to stick with the things I know i.e. rust and rattles, the Toyotas look nice and handle, but you can hardly carry  a bag of crisps, and the engines can be dodgy ( oval pistons ) and I recall that the exhausts can be troublesome.

The older mx5's can rot, but mine is lovely ( apart from being 7 different shades of green...)

Huge exaggeration. Earlier cars had problems with the oil rings causing excessive usage. Most got rectified and later cars were revised. Apart from that, name any other faults:)

Practicality was never the MR2's strong point, but then neither was it the MX5's. As stated above, it was an issue with the oil rings causing problems. Aside from excess oil usage, the precats died due to oil rings letting too much oil past. I've looked at numerous MX5's and all have had corrosion issues. A neighbour has a 54 plate euphonic, purely a weekend car, never seen rain and even that has started to rust.

I understand where you are coming from, and I agree that the mr2  is a lovely car, if looked after, and any that are still around ( I know they are not that old really ) should have had any issues sorted, but having had an mx before, I had it in my head to have another one one day, but one that I could keep, and not have to worry about, so I got another, and it's lovely, apart from being 7 shades of green...

Colin, Colin, Colin - why couldn't you have kept it, then bought something sensible.

You knew that wasn't going to work out, deep down....

Ah lovely BBR. Yes, one of those would be quite fantastic :)

I'm not a fan of Japanese cars in general tbh, but I must say I was surprised how good the mx5 is, I thought it was going To e flimsy like honda's are, but it is actually really well made car, the other thing that shocked me was how much room there is inside, I'm quite a hench geezer built like the proverbial outhouse and i can get in and out of an mx5 easily.

I looked at getting an MX5 before buying the Fabia. This thread is not helping my urge! Only reason I did not get one was because the insurance was dearer.

I've thought about a little sports car. Thought about a daihatsu Copen with the turbo engine. I like the look of the more recent hardtop mx5 but they're out of my price range

Got a Westfield sitting in the shed in bits! 4AGE engine waiting to go in!

Nice engine choice,  get over to WSSC-forum,a couple of 4age owners around, good technical knowledge there.

I've had my Mk1 MX5 for over 15 years now...   still wouldn't swap it for anything else which says something about the quality of the car and the way it drives!

And in that time I've got married, had two kids and lost a fair but of hair so hardly fit the joke profile...   ;-)

For those of you struggling to get in a Mk2 or 3 try a Mk1 - they are just that little but roomier inside due to the different dash and door casings etc.
