I was referring to the mk1 upto 2007 I have only seen salooons.

The Mk1 Superb is a stretched Passat. Really, that's all it is. It was born when customers in China demanded a LWB Passat. Long wheel base cars are really popular down there. VAG management then figured they'd bring it home and sell it in Skoda showrooms as well. 
 
It was indeed available as a sedan only and if I recall correctly, you can't fold the rear seat. I seem to remember it was a trade-off they had to make to keep the structural rigidity with the longer wheel base.
 
The Superb (and Passat) is built from the same bits as the first Audi A4, as well as the A6 from the same era. It has an expensive and complicated front suspension which will need at least one or two new control arms per year. There are eight of them in total. They're also known to eat CV joints.

Just put a wanted add up!!

if your going for a skoda go for the octavia mk2 over a superb mk1 as the handling is not as good compared on the mk1 superbs

the only downside to the 1.9tdi is that the engine sounds like a tractor compared to more modern diesel engines but it is a very reliable engine. (did 200k on a bora tdi and engine was still running sweet and didn't use a drop of oil)

 

the only comment that my mate made that owns a avensis, was that the clutch pedal can get quite heavy with mileage

Of all the diesel engines used by Skoda the old 1.9 is by far the best.  The newer 2.0 is less economical and far more likely to break.  I can't speak for the Toyota, but I do wonder why you dismiss the Mondeo.  Of all the cars I have owned the Mondeo was the best to drive and also the most reliable.  More expensive to buy new than an Octavia, but actually used I think they are rather better value.

I think you were lucky. My fathers and my friends Mondeo both had ECU problems and power steering problems both incurring HUGE bills and had shocking reliability.. Wouldn't touch one with a borrowed barge pole after the experiences these poor devils had! My fathers one was bought new and these problems came to light soon after the warranty ran out it was a low mileage car!

I work for one of the emergency services and we have been using the 1.9tdi Octavia's as response vehicles since the Mk1 many years ago. They are abused and lead a very hard (albeit relatively short) life, and are usually retired at about 115k.

 

They are generally reliable, occasional issues with DMF (what modern diesel doesn't) and are far more popular & reliable than the Astra's that are now being bought to replace them.

Personally I think the Octavia.

 

The 1.9 is a cracker. People talk a lot about it being noisy but honestly I don't think it is. Maybe from outside but driving along it's usually inaudible.

 

Also the good thing about the 1.9 is that you can fit a single mass flywheel very easily should the DMF ever go.

 

Unfortunately I don't have that option due to DSG but the DSG is kinder to the DMF than a manual box.

Just hit 40k with a 2.0CR 140, 3 x 10k services (plus one next week) and 1 light bulb, no other costs. Tyres did a front to rear last year and all four are ready for replacement - no complaints with that mileage. Based on forum recs the Falken's look good.

one of the biggest problems with this car if you are a taxi driver is the boots very small opening, can not fit big bags .

the late 2008 onwards they changed the opening to include the rear window.

a lovely car to drive but i would concur with which magazine that the 2002 to 2008 superb DO NOT BUY

not to use as a taxi

normal private use maybe fine ,

3 cars in our firm have 2007/2008 all have had problem expensive ones at that 

I don't do taxi driver milage, but I'm on a steady 30-40k a year.

 

I used to run a big Toyota (Camry rather than Avensis). The thing is driver comfort. With the big Toyotas, like BMW's, if you're the right shape, it's a road sofa, if you're the wrong shape, it's purgatory. Personally, I end up with back pain in a big way if I drive a BMW for more than half an hour, I know people who say the same thing about the japs.

I believe that's why the Toyota is on the list as he had two carina e's 1.8 petrol and 2.0 diesel and he done 12 hour shifts comfortably. they both done mega miles 300k+ with minimum expenses.

I thought the Octavia was on the list but he's talking about the old style Superb.

 

The Octavia has a cavernous boot and a massive opening.

The problem probably relates to the 2.0 PD engines in the MK1 superb as it has oil pump issues but the 1.9Tdi is fine

Thank you for input just out of interest is the verso on original flywheel and clutch.

 

 This has been changed at about 40k, it made a strange sound in reverse.

All things have been changed under garantee

1. clutch only

2. radio, bluetooth malfunction

3. interior roof lights (now in led original)

4. secondary belt(engine) now one tooth less as the original started to spin and made noise under aceleration(situation corrected by dealer)

5. front shock busted

6. defective headlight

7. defective rear camera

 

only the clutch took some time to get fix, otherwise was just a few minutes to on hour.

now on 165k

Re the Superb 2 litre, "Car Mechanics" recently did a feature on the major problems with these engines relating to the oil pump.

 

Apparently this particular engine type was mainly usen in the Passat but also in the Superb and possibly some Audis. There are stories of a  garage in London which specialises in Taxis where they had so many disabled Passats waiting on oil pumps that they had storage problems. The repair is usually expensive but if the failure was at speed then the car is scrap.That said, not all cars were affected by any means and good servicing with high quality oil is always a help.

 

Various mods were made by Vag but there wasn't a proper fix done until 2008.

The same engine was a known fault in the Audi A6 - the oil pump drive wears and can fail at any point after about 50k. This usually leads to a new engine being needed as there is no warning whatsoever. 

its in the lastest August i think copy of which can see it in your local library this magazine has normal which stuff in the front then you turn it over and it has cars its somewhere in there I will reiterate The boot is very limiting I would not recommend 2002 - 2008 skoda superb

I got rid of mine because i wasn't a taxi driver lol
