Tinitus to my right

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I have a 2012 Urban.  It has developed a just audible intermittent high pitched tinkling noise coming from the driver's side of the passenger compartment. Anyone had the same and can help point me to the source?

Many thanks

Garry

Other keys attached to your ignition key?

Its a good thought Trev, and have tested it out. Sadly they are not the culprit. The noise is to the drivers right in the side of the passenger compartment somewhere. Thanks very much for the idea though.

Seat Belt rattling against the interior trim?..............Tony

Presumably you have taken all you personal bits and pieces out of the glove box, centre console, door pockets, dashboard cubby, sunglasses holder and the drawer under the passenger seat (if the Urban has this) to eliminate the noise source as something in one of these? I only ask because for a day I had an irritating noise that I eventually tracked down to a few loose mints rattling in their tin! All the time the tin was reasonably full they didn't rattle - down to the last half dozen and there was space for them to move around and rattle against the side of the tin. Ate the sweeties - problem solved!

(Writing this I've just realised how many spaces there are in the Skoda to put things and forget they are there!)

Oops sorry for delay in replying been away.

Seat belt was my first thought Tony the only thing I can do to test it is lock it up or play with the tension by pulling the belt and this makes no difference to the sound. The car is not cluttered but I think the next stage is to do as Paul suggests and clear everything out to see if the sound goes away.  If not then a visit to the dealers is in order.  Thanks all.

Iceni, I'm not terribly technical so this could be totally ridiculous, if it's not the seat belt or rattles in the glovebox etc. could it possibly be something lose in the gearshift linkage - that would match your description of "driver's side of the passenger compartment". Hopefully someone more technically minded will be able to tell you whether that's even possible.

Guess its possible Paul, but deffo sounds as if its to the driver right.  Will try hand on gearstick when I hear the sound to see it stops or changes. Thanks

Its possible to be misled by the direction of a high-frequency sound source.

After years of wearing an earpiece in one ear, my high frequency acuity has deteriorated in that ear to the extent that any 'tinkling' type sound will always seem to be from my good side.

Get someone to drive while you sit in the rear seat. turning your head while listening will give a better sense of its origin.

Just a thought, but nothing has dropped into the pocket behind the wheel arch and causing the noise? My terrier has a habit of dropping her "treasures" - stones she collects on walks - down there in my car and I only realise when they clink together going round corners. Sorry if this sounds a daft suggestion but it doesn't hurt to check just in case".

Check out the ticket holder - a small gap can develop and it the tinkles and buzzes against the windscreen.

Some good ideas there folks.  I will work through them and if I find the bit responsible will post the solution.

Cheers again

My rattle a while ago that was a real pain to find turned out to be my wrist watch metal strap  :giggle:

Hi just got a Yeti, I noticed this yesterday - it's very high pitched and actually hurts your right ear. I lowered the window as I thought it was in that area. I found that a high frequency noise was coming off the wing mirror above 30 mph and have a feeling this could be it. I have fold in mirrors

I had a similar irritating buzz /noise and was convinced that it emanated from the passenger door / front glove box. Having emptied both and not resolved the problem i then looked at the central arm rest box and lo and behold problem solved - it was my phone charger rattling about. The sound and cause seemed incompatable but putting a handkerchief under the phone charger did the trick.

I have a small rattle from my passenger headrest. A well aimed small "punch" solves the problem for a while....
