Limp home mode

Featured Replies

I was just happily driving along to n my 1.2 tsi yeti when all of a sudden the car became very sluggish and jerky. At first I thought I'd put the car in 6th instead of 4th but then suddenly the engine management light came on along with the traction control light and an epc light. I had to limp back home with the car seemingly running on 3 cylinders and a queue of unhappy drivers behind me. I just hope it's not related to the turbo or timing chain issue these engine's had.

UPDATE:

A very nice man from roadside assistance came and ran a diagnostic and found ht lead no 3 was faulty which happens to be the one closest to anything hot. He said it's very common so he always carries spares. I told him I was worried that might be the turbo but he told me the car has had the recalls done for turbo shim, timing chain and ecu update and they shouldn't be an issue now. Phew.

It's that No 3 lead again, again!

Yes. The chap says they carry more of them because it's so common. He did say out of all the vw group cars the Skoda has least problems and Audi come off worse.

Did the new lead have the additional armour sleeve?

Yes. The new one has that coiled cover over it. The technician said that newer tsi's had a raised plastic guide keeping the leads away from the engine. At least it was a cheap fix. Only £18 for the lead. He advised me for peace of mind to carry on with roadside assistance when it runs out later this year.

Hi Andy, it is always a heart felt relief when a problem is fixed so easily. Are you planning to fit armour sleeves to the other three leads?

Does anyone know if this is a problem with the other engines or is confined to the 1.2 only?

Sounds very similar to what happened to me 3 months ago - again 1.2 TSI DSG - setting off on very busy A30 roundabout it went ping - EPC light on and moved forward like a stuttering snail - right in front of a huge lorry - scary moment.

It proceeded slowly sounding like it was mis-firing until I could pull off the road. Turned the engine off to try to compose myself before phoning for Assistance - turned it on again and it was fine.

I had only done around 750 miles in it at the time. Took it in to Dealer Truscotts in Helston, they were very concerned and did quite a few miles in it trying to reproduce the fault, with no success they did change one part, but were obviously embarrassed at not being able to say they were totally sure they had fixed it. No mention was ever made of the HT Leads

Since then we have been up country to Oxfordshire/Berkshire and back with no problems, but still only done 1,700 miles

Hi Banjobach I will look to put some kind of protection over the others but I've no idea what to use or where from. It will have to be quite heat resistant of course.

Looked at mine this morning and it doesn't have the extra shielding. No3 lead runs extremely close to the turbo heat shield and wouldn't take much to actually rest on it. I've done the typical (ex) mechanic thing and done a bodge up very clever thing and clipped it away from the heat source. I hope this will stop me getting this all too common problem.

Hi Perranlady

I believe we had delivery of our Yetis in the same week , mine has the extra armour sleeves over the HT leads so I'm presuming yours has the same so this should rule out any faults in this area.

I've done a few more miles than you now on 4200 and just off to Ireland which will put another 1500 on the clock.

Begining to wonder if a diesel would have been a wiser choice as it appears I will be putting 10000 plus on the clock per year.
