Noisy & Clunky Gearshift

Featured Replies

Does anyone have a noisy gearshift on their Superb ?  Mine clunks and creaks when going between 2nd and 3rd and occasionally 4th and 5th.  It is the shift rather than the gearbox as I can feel the clunks are actually near the lever somewhere. Is there a fix for this ?

This may not be any help at all but I'll say it anyway!

I had a similar issue on a previous car (Peugeot 306).

The local garage lifted the car up on the ramps and applied some grease to all of the gear lever linkages from the lever to the gear box.

The gear changes were like new afterwards!

im having similar issues buy onky if trying to change quickly. Anyone know how to remove the gaiter without causing any damage so I can have a peep

The first service is due soon so I will see what the dealer says

The carpeted trims that flank the transmission tunnel are easily removed and enable you to get to some of the internal linkage. These are the (vertical) ones  that run frim the clutch pedal footrest to just behind the gear knob.

At the pedal end they are secured by two metal clips that fit into two metal brackets. These are meant to come apart if pulled in the direction of the doors.

Midway along the panel is a variation on Velcro holding the trim. At the rear it just tucks under the next rearwards piece of trim. It comes off with a bit of a bang, I suggest getting your fingers underneath its lower edge near the front, you'd be unlucky to damage it when removing, its quite flexible, so you can almost 'unpeel' it front to back. No tools are required.

At the gearbox end the cables are well-protected by rubber boots, but the selector mechanism beyond this is underneath the airbox and is completely exposed. Its sliding surfaces are plastic against steel, so any wet lubricant here will just attract loads of crud. I have tried graphite powder after thoroughly cleaning with only limited success. And pulling back the dust boots to oil the cables doesn't do that much either.

Love to hear what the garage does.

An update on this. Its now been to the garage three times to have it looked at. They all agree there is a problem but finding it is proving elusive. The linkages have been lubricated, the gear selection adjustment realligned at the box and still no sign of a fix.   The latest thinking is that it may actually be the gear knob as the technician who tested it found that if he changed gear using the gear lever shaft rather than the gear knob the noise went away. There is now a new knob on order. Its a weird one.

Same clunking sound here, let us know if you find a solution!

Sounds like it could well be the gear lever itself. Has that been greased? Can it maybe stripped down and inspected?

We also had problems with the levers on a Pug 306. Ended up with selecting what felt like 4th on the motorway at 70mph... it actually went into 2nd... bang!

Finally we got to the bottom of this; it was the gear knob.   Its not just a knob as there are other parts to it including an acrylic bush that the technician thought might be the cause and it would appear that it was that clicking.  A new knob under warranty and the problem is completely cured.

What identified the problem was the fact that if you changed gear using the lever shaft rather than holding the knob (ooeeeer missus :giggle: ) then the noise went away

Thanks for this info Pesmog. Was really obvious on a low milleage 140TDI I test drove and just discernible on my car (170 TDI) and your greenline so fault is common across range, gear knob! Most noticible going into 3rd from 2nd I found.

You can get the noise by twisting the gear stick if you want to demo it to the garage but it happens to stay quiet for the test drive. It seems to be in the sliding linkage used when selecting reverse.
