Garage Width

Featured Replies

Anyone know if it is possible to park a Yeti inside an 8 foot wide garage (2.44m) and get out of the drivers door without too many contortions? I could park closer to the passenger side but would welcome the views from anyone with practical experience!

I checked this very thing out when I had a Yeti as a courtesy car. My garage is on the small side. The door width is 7ft 6in (229cm) and the car goes in fine. The garage width inside is wider by just over 12 inches on each side. I found that I could get out of the car without any trouble. There was a bit less room than when I park my Fabia but I was glad to know that if I get a Yeti next year it will fit.

So Expatman is the width you quote the door opening or the internal width between the walls? If you have an internal width of 8 ft I don't think a Yeti will fit very well. Hope this helps.

Total garage width is 8 foot, door opening is just over 7 foot. I can park closer to the passenger side so maximising drivers side clearance but still would be more limited than your tests. Do you think it impossible to get out or just a bit of a contortion?

I've just measured the inside width of the garage and it's 8 feet 9 inches. I think you might just be okay. However I would advise test driving a Yeti and see if it will fit - try before you buy!

Just check your garage door is tall enough ... my Yeti won't go under the door!  Thank goodness for that heated screen in winter!

I reverse mine in, can get passenger side really close to wall and open drivers door wide enough to get out comfortably. ( no auto fold-in mirrors, btw)

Standard brick 16' x 8' 3" attached garage. Can open tailgate fully inside garage.

I have an up-and-over door at both ends, so I can actually drive through!

I already have the Yeti - we are moving to a different area and the house SWMBO loves only has a single garage with internal width 8' x 16, long. Height is okay and I eventually set up a trial using a large post set 8' from my existing garage wall, found I could park approx. 7" from the wall (wing mirrors folded) then open the drivers door sufficiently for a reasonable exit - no worse than some car parks anyway, luckily I am fairly slim. Guess I will get some 10mm heavy duty foam and stick it to the garage wall to cushion the door when opened and set up some hanging balls to get the positional parking exact.

Yes, I'm sure you'll be okay - just don't put on any weight! As for the walls, I bought a 3ft x 2ft carpet runner from Dunelm Mill (£3) and attached it to the wall on the driver's side. Works a treat.

That is a good idea - cheap too. Now thinking of a system to get the position and distance of passenger side from wall exact.

My garage is 8 ft 6 ins wide and goes in ok, I also added the carpet pieces to the walls as well. I did find the aerial was hit by the door when closed, so I bought some 4 inch thick foam and put at the end of the garage. I now drive right up to the wall until the car will go no further, the foam stops any front damage to the paint as it compresses and the door now misses the aerial

.....my old next door but one neighbour had a drive through garage......just the once....then had to have the back wall rebuilt.....too many sherberts were suspected.

It made quite a racket at 11pm.....

The front of the Anglia was never quite the same :giggle:

Positioning lengthwise is no problem - hanging a tennis ball by a piece of string then driving forward till it touches the windscreen. Positioning very close to passenger side wall is a little more tricky - just a little bit out once and "ouch" - not saying who would be driving either! So looking for a foolproof guidance method.

My Tiguan was a tight fit in the garage.

I built up a 'step' just inside of the door....about 3 to 4 feet using a piece of old fence post.....set out from the wall with 4x2. The step was too big for the car to climb and using sensible slow driving I could rub the tyre very gentle along the post doing no damage to car, tyre, wall, garage or pride. In fact with practice I rarely caught the wood.

I removed it since the Yeti is a bit smaller

Thanks - that is a good idea! I guess I could use some very heavyweight self adhesive foam I have (4" x 4") stuck to the floor. I would certainly 'feel' that with the wheels and it should be easy on the tyres.

The foam is worth a Try
