Loud Rumble noise when 40mph+

Featured Replies

Hi guys, When going 40mph+ in my fabia theres a loud noise coming from somewhere cant quite tell where its coming from now it almost sounds like the exhaust but it stays at the same level throughout... its quite noisy at times.. can actually hear it over the radio, was wondering if anyone knows what it could be?

Hi, if it's a rumble/droning noise I'd say it's most likely to relate to a wheel bearing on it's way out. Not uncommon on the Fabs & think I may have a rear one starting to complain, having replaced the front offside last year.  ;)

are these bearings available at Halfords or something or is this an internet jobby?

If it's bearing related you should be able to locate the noise to one of the 4 corners & it will probably be more pronounced when cornering, hence applying more load. The replacement is relatively cheap to buy & available from most decent auto parts suppliers or on line if you prefer. The down side is the need for a certain amount of more specialist equipment, e.g. hydraulic press, which most of us don't have access to. My lad works for a truck repair company & we used their workshop one morning to do the job. The quotes we got beforehand equated to around 200 quid from memory, hence the diy approach.

Of course it may not be this & if it resonates then may be worth checking your exhaust system to ensure it's all sound.

Hi thank you for the responses the noise seems to be coming from the left rear wheel.. i jacked it up the other day and they're seems to be no movement at all in the wheel and it seems smooth when spinning the wheel apart from a slight rub off the brakes... does this mean that it isnt the wheel bearing or is there any other things i could do to check the wheel bearing?

Put the spare on the corner you think the noise is coming from, to exclude the wheel/tyre.

If the wheel bearing is shot it will sound like a farily constant and will produce a very annoying droaning noise. Jack each wheel up in turn and rotate each wheel. It will feel gravelly when whe wheel is turned, there may not necessarily be any excessive play in the wheel. The cost is not cheap as the hub which contains part of the ABS needs to be replaced as a single unit. It has just cost me £150 to have the front N/S replaced along with the ABS sensor which fell apart during removal.

A slight brake rub could possiby cause a speed related resonance. Have you tried pressing the button in on the handbrake and gently applying it at 40mph to see if the noise changes at all?

You mention 40mph. Does the noise decrease or cease above this speed?

Rub your hands around the tyre tread to check that it's not got uneven wear. I had 3" scallops worn all around the inside edge - thought s bearing had died ... It was due the camber setting on the octy.

Ill try the spare tyre idea! the noise gets slightly louder the faster i go.. not by alot but noticable.

Sounds like a wheel bearing to me, my local garage recently did the N/SR for 75 notes.
