new car......towbar question

Featured Replies

Tested the new vrs yesterday, my current car is Golf GTi which I bought new 6 years ago and has been a dream to own and drive. However it no longer fits the family needs. I am going to order the vrs next week. Going for black estate with black pack, sunset glass, spare wheel, variable floor and Amundsen sat nav and colour maxi dot screen and tow bar prep. I was wondering whether the rear trim is cut to allow room for the tow bar. Does anyone have any pics of a tow bar fitted to the vas?

Thanks

Hi, I'm also a Golf GTI owner thinking about making the jump to the VRS. I also have the same question re towbar. Also does anyone know how much the FF removable towbar for the VRS is? Options mention towbar preparation only, dealer told me that is for the electrics only. Would be great to see photo of a VRS with towbar fitted, and removed view.

Btw nice choice of colour, I'm thinking black and black pack. In have pearl black on my golf, looks fab (when it's clean!)

Just test drove a Blue VRS estate here in Aberdeen, was manual petrol, seemed pretty good. Want to try the DSG as that's what I have in Golf. Dealer didn't rate DSG, guess it's personal preference!

Have the tow bar fitted to my estate. No trim has been cut but couldn't tell you how much it is as got the dealer to throw it in with the deal. If you need it to charge your caravan whilst towing, you will still need to see an aftermarket fitter as skoda dont do a split charge kit & according to there tech team dont have plans for one!!

Don't know how relevant this is, but I've got a detachable towbar fitted to my estate and as previously said, there's been no cutting of trim. It was factory fitted when new and you wouldn't even know it was there. The electrics socket is hinged and folds away out of sight to keep it dirt free and the towbar itself fits into a foam insert inside the spare wheel when not in use.  The only problem is that you cannot fit and lock the detachable towbar without kneeling on the ground and looking under the rear bumper trim. It all works very well though.

Thanks for the reply, the tow bar is for a cycle carrier

Thanks for the reply, the tow bar is for a cycle carrier

My current cycle carrier is the type that clamps directly onto the tow ball, so my detachable towbar is fine for that.  If you've got the type of cycle carrier that that bolts between a towbar and a towball, then the Skoda detachable won't be any good as it's a swan neck type that slots up into the towbar assembly and locks in position with a lever and key. You might need to get something like a Witter towbar or a different type of cycle carrier.

I have not got the carrier yet, currently load 4 bikes onto the roof of my current car. When I change would like to be able to got to towbar cycle carrier, the one I am looking at is Thule 929 EuroClassic G6 + 9281 4th Bike Adapter, which looks like it mounts on the ball of the tow bar.

Isn't there a concern with the towbar weight limit with that many bikes? 4 bikes and the carrier can be quite a lot of weight combined.

I used to tow a caravan with mine and I think the nose weight limit (load on tow ball) was something like 75kg. Not sure how much bikes weight, but you should be fine.

Page 38 of the online brochure has the "Nose Weight" of ALL Octy3's as 75kg.

I can't remember what I worked it out at, but my carrier and 2 cheap and cheerful mountain bikes come to enough I couldn't get a 3rd on.

i have a detachable tow bar on my MK2 vrs, i was hoping to put the same on the MK3 when it arrives, i also only use it for bikes, then take it off, fold the electrics away for that clean look

i was wondering if my old bar will fit the new MK3.

Old bar wont fit the mkIII as was going to try and do the same with mine

I am having a swan neck fitted to my 63 plate vrs estate on Tuesday so can post a picture then. Skoda all electric charging me £399. With 13 pin electrics.

Can you still get a towbar fitted with 7 pin electrics rather than 13pin, or is it 13 pin only now?

Is it the dealer doing this? I been quoted £650 by the dealer and a Witter fitter, for a removable swan neck with 13 pin.

I have factory fited detachable tow bar on my MKIII vrs. With tow bar you get adapter 7 pin to 13 pin.

It is the dealer fitting my towbar but they use an independent specialist who fits the bar in their factory. It's a fixed swan neck, not a detachable. Garage is all electric group in birmingham. I struggled to find an independent specialist who could fit one, most said they were not available. I will post when its fitted to give some further feedback. It is a witter bar that's being fitted.

I've had a quote from the fitter my dealer uses for a detachable Swan neck with universal 13 pin wiring and a switch in the boot for the parking sensors for £310 fitted to my hatchback (rather than the dedicated wiring which doesn't need the switch but adds £150)

No, all of it is hidden under the bumper.
