Is it just me :confused: or is the old 130bhp PD TDi not fond of the warm weather that we have experienced in the North West today . Drove to work this morning when it was cool and it was its usual fairly refined, smooth and powerful self , drove home this evening and it was no where near as responsive and was chucking out a load more soot :eek:

It's why I will be signing up for the FMIC GB as soon as Neo_VR has finished help testing it

It's a result of heat soak. Either go for a FMIC or opt for a water-spray system to keep the existing intercooler ... er ... cooler

Its made out of alloy, so ill bet it weighs less than the original (small) sidemount item... it weighs about 2 or 3kg..

Its a front mounted intercooler. it cools the air that goes into the engine

Heatsoak is when the engine is affected by the heat of the air going into it.. because hot air is less dense, so doesnt combust as strongly, the engine has to start lowering turbo boost levels and fuelling to keep optimal running.. which to the driver feels like the engine is being lethargic and down on power..

Sounds good, take it you had it custom built? Please forgive my lack of technical knowledge, as you probably can tell I'm no mechanic !! Take it that will make on hell of a difference then?

Is that the 50mm depth version there Colin? - i see the mounting lugs seem to have been adjusted - looks better..

Matt: yes it is the 50mm ver. mounting lugs are same, but the whole i/c is lower down.. leaves scope for adjustment

its about getting a balance between cooling efficience without causing too much turbo lag.. it could swing either way at the moment.

Hmmm, even when it was 31/32 degrees my vRS was as fast/responsive with deffo no more soot :confused:

Depends on how you drive it too - but even I noticed it smoking badly, and normally I hardly ever get that.

The car is definitely slower / prone to heatsoak during warm days when you do a bit of accelerate/slow-cycling..

There is definately a performance drop in hot weather.. the engine seems "wooley" and sluggish..

it will smoke a bit more.. but just wait if you get intake or fuel temps up to the 90c trigger temp

I thought (on petrol cars at least) heatsoak causes overfuelling? I.E. boost reduced and fuelling increased to combat detonation, which is why there's more smoke and generally your fuel economy is crapper?

Mine is smokin badly above 4k in this warm weather but it's only in 4th and 5th, havn't tried it in 6th. Must be when the load / drag increased, it's enough to put other drivers off driving too close.

Diesel not burning properly causes the smog screen stuff

If you plant it at low revs in a high gear you'll see what I mean. Better to drop a cog, rev it up a bit more.

@black magic - I'd hope you dont get up to 4k in those gears on a public road ;)
