turbo whistle?

Featured Replies

Noticed a whistle this morning only does it less than 2000 rpm when reving and when let engine wind down, sounds like turbo spooling and winding down. Before today i have never heard it this loud is it likely to actually be turbo or a small boost leak?

Its getting me worried now any help apreciated.

Won't hurt to check connections of the pipes

Could this be sticky vnt? As it is on such low revs?

Ok managed to check all top boost pipes, and vnt. No leaks and vnt moves freely.

However i revved engine with section of boost pipe missing and no whistle so does this eliminate the turbo and suggest lower boost pipes? As surely turbo will still spin so long as theres is exhaust gas.

I will try and add a video of sound any help appreciated as have a 5 hour trip on friday and am getting worried.

My PD100 whistles a bit at idle when the engine is loaded (turning the power steering when parking etc). It's been doing it for as long as I've had it.

I just so happened to do a service on it today, and noticed a very small amount of oil on the offside rear of the under tray. I crawled under to have a look at the turbo......and the pipe that goes from the turbo to the bottom of the intercooler has been blowing oil from the seal where it connects to the turbo. I took the pipe off and couldn't see much wrong with it. The end of the pipe is a beefy looking alloy casting, with an O-ring on the end of it. When it is connected to the turbo with the spring clip in place, there is quite a bit of play which doesn't seem right.

Perhaps it's worth checking this on your car. I've read a few instances of this happening. You need to get the under tray off to see it properly. I suppose a new pipe would fix it, but I think the part is £100! I might try and source new O-rings for the pipe and see if that helps.

It could be annoying thing is i had the undertray off for ages as im trying to get the lower boost pipes custom made. Only put it on other week and its a tight squeeze getting back under.

Annoying! I know it's tight......if you have a couple of bricks to drive it up onto that'll probably give you enough space to get it off and save the hassle of jacking it up.

Might have to try tomorrow, only thing ive had done recently is a service and wandering if oil feed pipe is blocked but that wouldnt make sense why it only whistles at 2000rpm.

Am i right in thinking that the turbo spins from any exhaust gas? I am thinking it maybe the seal on bottom pipe as it only whistles at 2000rpm, possibly enough pressure to find a small leak just before the seals expand?

The only other reason it could be whistling is that there may be impeller damage, you'll be able to see this if you look down the inlet directly at the top of the impeller.

booke32, try parking on a kerb hence one side higher to gain access, just a thought been there done it or facing up a hill, less weight on front end.

Unfortunately no leaky pipes, but i couldnt get enough access underneath to take pipe off and look into turbo so still another sleepless night.

Had the verdict today, bearings are wearing causing movement in the shaft. Apparently it will keep getting worse over next few thousand miles before finally giving up. Not sure why the turbo only lasted just over a year but have to give a massive thanks to jbs chesterfield and aet turbos who between them will have my car back on road in couple of days with upgraded hybrid components.
