Broken headlight mounting brackets

Featured Replies

Well, just my luck. Thanks to some great parkjob by a halfblind moron, my right headlight was pushed into the bumper tonight.

Front and rear mount are broken. These are the AFS Xenon lights. All lights work as they should (thank God!) but it's not secured anymore.

Looking to replace this, however I don't feel like shelling out for a complete new headlight, since they are so expensive.

1. Would it be possible to buy a halogen lightunit and fit the xenon/AFS mechanism in there, considering halogen units are cheaper?

2. Also I read about the "headlight repair kit", this is supposedly a kit from Skoda with brackets to secure a headlight. Has anyone had any experience with these?

Doubt that you can fit bi-xenon / adaptive internals to a regular halogen headlamp.

Since I've never fitted the repair kit, I can't say whether the Passat one is the same. I would doubt that it is. If only the website you found had illustrations, you could compare the pictures with the eBay listing.

Reckon it's a trip to your local friendly Skoda Parts Department - hopefully the repair kit will do the job..........

Yeah it's a long shot about switching the internals, just found out a halogen Hella headlight is 193€'s, a xenon Hella headlight (with motors without lights) is 450€, not 1500€ like I thought :)

I talked to my local dealer, they have heared of the repair kit, they have one for a Superb, but they have to look at the car to see if it will work. He told me you can completely snap off the broken tabs, this creates recesses, and the repair kit has several pieces that snap into the recesses so you can mount them. Hope that works...I will be sure to get some pictures of this for future reference, since they are so easely broken.

They do a similar kits for Audi headlamps.

My Bi xenons are £500 each replacing them or...

£24 for a genuine Audi headlight tab replacement kit like these

Repair kit or xenon headlam unit are the only options.

Firstly I doubt you could make it fit into a halogen headlamp unit and also it would render your headlamps illegal here in the UK.

Cheers

Steve

I post the part numbers about two month ago. Use the repair kit I have just bought one today from my Skoda dealer here in Germany and they cost 5 euro and 85 cent for the two torq bolts very easy to do and the lights are back to being very secure. The only problem it that I think that you will need to drop your bumper to get in to do it.

Hi Rabmurray, yeah I got your partnumbers printed out, going to visit the dealer on the way back from work. The ebay kit was just an example that they exist for the VW/Audi's

Dropping the bumper is indeed mandatory to remove the headlights, I haven't managed to find a good guide on how to do this, if I can't find it it'll be a dealer job. Thanks for the tip on the repair kit, I really hope I manage to avoid buying a new unit :(

The xenon ahd halogen headlights are different.

The xenon unit has a square cut-out just to the right of the projector lense that allows for the cornering function. The halogen headlamp doesn't.

It should be worth noting that the xenon headlight itself is not the expensive bit, it is the bulb, ballast and ingnitor that cost the most.

Assuming non of these components are damaged if the repair kit doesn't work then you could just buy the xenon headlight cluster and refit the remaining components onto the new headlight.

There is a brand new genuine Skoda European (left hand drive) headlight on eBay with a £0.99 starting price (both sides are available)...

You can also see the different projector shape for the xenon unit (at 9 o'clock on the projectors circumference).

Contacted that seller, but he's asking the big bucks for them...at least 400€'s a piece. Looks like they do come with all the lights etc, so will keep an eye out. Monday first thing I'm heading to the dealer to check if the repair kit would work for me.

Thanks Rabmurray for the guide on how to remove the front bumper! :)

I had  the fitting brackets fitted on my MKII Superb, after a pigeon hit the nearside headlamp, full cost parts and fitting £75 about 10 months ago.

Dealer did not mention a repair kit, without actually fully examining vehicle quoted for a new head lamp + fitting.

A local VAG approved  repair shop asked to see the vehicle, they talked about a repair kit, genuine VAG. Asked me to leave vehicle so they could remove front and examine damage, then had a driver take me home 14 miles, that was about 9am. Next day at 5pm. rang me up to say car was ready, next morning a car was sent to collect me another 14 miles. Total charge as above £75. No charge for taking me home or back to collect vehicle.

Repair kit worked fine, all 3 plastic tabs were broken off, all 3 were repaired without issues using the repair kit. 7€ total cost! :)

A bit better than a new lamp! Better to have those sacrificial tabs and not damage the rest of the light. Some sensible thinking by someone

Yeah it's very well thoughtout. Beware though, dealers will *always* come up with the "new headlight" solution, if you mention the repair kit they definately try to discourage you to use that, but it works just fine. So well worth it!

Do you have a VAG number for this repair kit? People how have this issue in the future will be thankful!

This forum proves once more a life saver. I ordered the repair kit for both headlights for less than 31 euros.

@rabmurray121thank you very much indeed!

What a great write up thanks guys. Quick question do I need to trim off old brackets? have you used just screws or have you used some sealant aswell?

  • 1 year later...

Sorry to throw up an old thread,  is left/right from the front of the car, or inside?  So passenger/near side in the UK side = right?

  • Sponsor

As from when you're sitting in the car, so UK nearside is left.

  • 2 years later...

Anyone knows if the part numbers above are good for the xenon lights with cornering. I have 2 broken clips (top and side one) and don't have the broken parts... and I am trying to fix it instead of buying a second hand or new headlight

Be careful of some of the links above under the current situation
