The egr debate!

Featured Replies

Removing the EGR valve WILL reduce the life of your turbo, it WILL increase fuel consumption during lean cruise conditions and it WILL increase toxic NOx emissions.

Removing the EGR valve WON'T increase performance.

Keep your EGR system clean and well maintained and do the elephant mod to keep it that way.

Only VERY highly tuned cars don't work properly with the stock EGR system so it has to be mapped out, very highly tuned means big turbos and bigger injectors, usually those cars running well above 200bhp.

Don't do dumb mods if you have no idea why you're doing them other than because you can!

Whilst all the above might be true, my one argument for deleting is I want my engine to always be eating air, not eating already burnt exhaust gases. If that comes at the cost of marginal fuel economy losses and more nox so be it. Not that nox matters for a Tdi mot test anyway.

The only time your engine is eating exhaust gas is when the ECU has determined that the engine is actually getting more air than it needs for the prevailing operating conditions and the ECU doesn't want to inject more fuel because it would be wasted. So there's that.

We'll I don't want any, even a wisp, at all, ever. That black gunk scares me especially to think an engine is being asked to digest it again.

Hi Lukeanderson31,

I have a 2004 1.9tdi ATD engine Elegance. Do you think this Egr delete is worth it on the car we drive as nearly all the posts are concerning Vrs models.

Regards,

John42

as per standard engine spec probably not. it just means the inlets cleaner really. besides that, my asv and egr were sticking. I have the later axr engine as opposed to your atd.

but my old atd engine, I had planned to do the same. I cleaned out the inlet completely at the same time. no performance gain that I can see. just piece of mind really that its not all full of crap :) aha

that said, im now running 230bhp on a gtb turbo. so not sure how it would affect a standard pd100 engine.

despite getting no answer to No18 here goes--- this is all very well but no-one has answered the question     if it's leaking from the two small breather holes   just clean up the other one  and fit  --even better ---check the manifold while it's off and clean if necessary ---   then plug the vac line to the silver flying saucer (on top)  unless your a tree hugger  otherwise re fit   and your done--assuming the other isn't shot!!!!

  • 3 weeks later...

You know what, I been planning all week ahead for today, have all the new gaskets ready, all the right tools, been reading up all week on how to remove the EGR value which is leaking oil in my car, watched tons of how to videos, read up about EGR deletes against the potential of a clean maintained EGR value and system.

Decided to just keep it clean, you know take it of every second oil service maybe (20,000) clean it up and stick it back on, no need for a delete and the resulting remapping to get rid of any service light issues.

But you know what, been at it for the last 4 hours, was about to go down the shop for my 3rd and 4th can of Mr Muscle Over Cleaner, and you know what have finally decided after seeing the state of the value on the inside, **** this, am still going to be here for at least another 4 hours scraping the **** that built up inside the manifold and this stupid value.

So eBay here I come in search of a deletion kit, and I dont care what not having this value set up does, if there are any negatives to the delete, I dont care there is no way it can be as bad as all this crap built up and potentially flying around inside my intake system, NO ****ING WAY.

Can End this debate for anyone thinking of running a delete right now, decide for your self after you have seen the crap inside your own EGR value, just take the value out, which just like everyone says is a pain in the ass every step of the way, look inside it and decide if you want to clean or delete it, simple.
