just adjusted my dragon tunning (digital) box to level 16!! great performance but no smoke?? im not conplaining, just a bit curious why everyone seams to get smoke bellowing out the back of there furby vrs's but not mine?? also got pikey mods and cupra intake. could this be why?

It could be the extra cooling you've allowed (P1/2). I've already got the Cupra intake + Green Filter. Mine doesnt tend to smoke generally

Smoke in a newer derv is unburnt fuel. All dervs will give a little puff at gear changes under acceleration, even yours walkie, its just such a small amount you may not notice. If you potter round town, stuck in a queue etc, then welly it, it will smoke then. Every derv i have had has done that. If it doesnt smoke, it might be running a little lean, ie a little too much air. If you are happy with the performance, no harm in leaving it that way.

Except for the overheating it will cause, which could do some harm, even in a diesel engine.

Obviously in a petrol engined vehicle, lean running can be VERY bad. Overheating, pinking (pre-ignition of the air/fuel mixture), even piston meltdown are not unheard of. In fact, my first Punto GT did exactly that before FIAT bought it back off me.

Far leaner than petrols, certainly. But over-leaning a diesel has one sinister effect you won't find on petrols - an over-lean diesel can overheat in the bores quite quickly, which can result in the fuel, which doubles as a lubricant to some degree tending to 'varnish' - it's lubricant properties lost, the engine can suffer accelerated wear.

I tend to find if you give it a good welly now and again it helps with less smoking.

I just hate when it's wet weather and that dirty soot sticks to the chrome tailpipe trim though!

My Fabia didn't smoke at all, even under hard acceleration (had several people follow me to confirm!) and that was with a tuning box too! My Mondeo is a bit smokier though, but not as bad as my Disco with the fuel pump wound right up

Btw, overfuelling a diesel can also lead to temperatures in the cylinder rising too high.....

The mods I've done are all in my sig, not got a tuning box or remap done (yet). I'm hoping to get the Miltek exhaust via the groupbuy here, and the FMIC when it's released as a GB as well. Then I'm getting the sump protector from the GB that Josh is trying to get sorted here

When the insurance is due for renewal I'll get a remap sorted out, for now I've gotta be happy with what I can get away with by my current insurer.

if its not smoking in your situation then your ok, but if its stands a lot in ques doing a lot of idling its building up a lot of carbon and that needs but be cleared. but diesels run better the more you rag the plums off them unlike petrols (although my petrol loves it) and get rid of that carbon, specially befor you go for an MOT.

My standard vRS smokes a fair bit at heavy/full throttle, even though it spends most of it's time on motorways. But it's no more than any other diesel I've driven.

my 54 plate fab vrs smokes - when i start it up in the morning - a puff blows out the back! also when im cruising and decide to put my foot down - it does kick out a puff of smoke!

Every now and then i notice a little bit of smoke behind my vRS, but not too much or too often. None of my friends/family have mentioned anything about it when they've been driving behind me anyway.

No smoke from my combi, I've got an adjustable tuning box fitted and on the low setting at the moment ... it don't smoke on the high setting either.

In light of the over-lean comments above, is it a good idea to go ahead with a jetex airfilter and cupra intake?

ive got a dragon box on my octy, and thats crancked up high with hardly any smoke.

i dont think its kicking out any more now than it was before.

ive had it higher still with no smoke, but turned it back a turn just incase.

IMHO there is no such thing as overlean in that sense - i.e. the ECU will sort out the fuel/air mixture. Providing more air means it allows for more fuel without it causing unburnt stuff to go out the exhaust

My car has been renamed Sooty by all who follow her. Ok track use is not typical but at full revs & full right boot she does smoke.
