Like a few people have previously noted, the rear parcel shelf is rather bulky. When carrying my mountain bike it gets in the way and therefore gets put in the shed. I don't like leaving the boot open, although I always have a groundsheet to cover anything in the boot, I just don't like leaving it open (I think it is a mild autistic tendency).

 

So I decided to make a roll up one. I used some van lining carpet, 2 thicknesses glued together with contact adhesive and  some 20mm plastic conduit to allow it to hinge on the normal hinge point, with another piece to allow it to rest on at the rear. 

 

Works well and can be stored in the rear footwell when using all the luggage capacity.

 

 

 

 

it will roll up tighter, the photo shows it loosely rolled.

 

Thought this may be of some use to anyone who was looking for a cheap solution (materials were about £30 incl postage). Took about 1 1/2 hrs to make

By the way you are hooking your net system on the wrong thing!  They are not supposed to be hooked on the bag carriers but should be hooked into the tiny little indents you see on the rail itself:
