Annoying marks on windscreen - done at factory?

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

I need some help. I have got some very annoying marks on my windscreen that I just cannot shift. I think someone must have written on the windscreen when the car was at the factory with some kind on permanent marker or something. The mark says "III B 252" and is right in my line of sight in the top corner of the windscreen. The mark has been cleaned off but some kind of residue remains. So far, I have tried the following and none will shift it...

- Glass cleaner (two makes)

- Super resin polish

- T-cut

- White spirit

- Nitro methane fuel from my RC car

- Brake fluid

It just won't budge.

Anyone got any ideas before I take it back to the dealer and ask for a new windscreen!!!

Thanx

Halfords glass cutter. I had a similar prob with my fabia, but mine was a load of rings. You have to put some effort in, but mine is crystal clear now.

Thanks Shifty, I'll get down to Halfords in the morning and give it a go...

Try fuel or thinner. Those remove anything.

Still no luck :(

Went to 3 different Halfords this morning and couldn't get hold of the Halfords Glass Cutter, it looks like they don't do it anymore. Instead the only similar thing they had was Halfords Cream Glass Cleaner. I tried that for about 30 minutes, rubbing really hard and still can't even start to shift. Also, went back to trying white spinner (which is a paint thinner) with a slightly more abrasive cloth and that won't touch it either. :thumbdwn:

Any other ideas folks?

I did have some Hammerite brush cleaner & thinners some where.......... I seem to remember it would remove almost anything ....expensive though at

Will paint thinner have a better chance of getting it off then white spirit?

It will have to go back to the dealer soon regarding a couple of rattles that have started. It would just be nice to get rid sooner rather than later. Plus, I would not be surprised if the dealer can't do anything about it...

Has anyone else seen these kind of marks? Do the factory do it?

Ask the dealer to remove the marks or replace the windscreen for you under warranty.

I think they write the shipping info or order number on the screen so the dealer should know how to remove it

Assuming its on the outside of the glass try some of the missus Nail varnish remover..it should contain acetone (propan-1-one)..same solvent base as most marker pens just use a small amount on a cotton bud and don't get it on the paintwork or rubber..

Tried some acetone based nail varnish remover tonight, still no luck. So it looks like I will have to leave it to the dealer next time it goes in :(

My car still has some of the grease on from the docks in places!!!!

Ive polished over the top of it though now, not noticable unless your looking.

Have you tried panel wipe?

Sounds like you tried enough though, why waste your money on it!

Back to the dealers

Wayne...

USE THINNER. It will remove anything...word of advice though, do NOT use it on any part of your car other than the windows and windscreen. It melts anything except those.

Car went back to the dealership this week and they had a look at the windscreen. Apparently the marks are wax crayon done by the factory (I saw some new cars on the forecourt with the same thing). And as the windscreens have recently changed to perspex it is impossible to shift if left for some time. The marks should have been removed when the car was valeted when it was delivered.

They have agreed to replace the windscreen under warranty - just have to wait for one to be delivered.

Mil - I did not try thinner. But, given all the other things I have tried I really don't think it would shift it.

Have you tried "New Cillit-BANG" it brought up my work coffee mug a treat

Windscreens are definitely NOT made of Perspex!!!!!!!!!

Well, that had changed something - maybe it was perspex coating?

No - it wouldn't be a coating either. The reason is that Perspex is a relatively soft material and scratches easily. A windscreen has to be glass for that reason. Even mine, I've scratched using a kitchen scouring pad to get rid of dirt - a Perspex one would have been ruined.

Can anyone else suggest what might have changed? Possibly something to do with a change to the interlayer?

Just a quick update on this...

The screen has now been replaced under warranty - woohoo :)

The new screen does seem to have a thinner sunstrip than the original though but I'm not going to worry about that...
