Opinions on "proper four season tyres" i.e. those with the mountain and snowflake symbols

Featured Replies

Basically I have an Audi A2 tdi running on Kleber Quadraxers and I really rate them as a good single tyre to run year round, a little bit noisier than standard summer rubber but as the car is so light they last incredibly well. My Mk1 Octavia 4x4 is due for new rubber as I have been scrubbing off the last of my winters. and I am only interested in proper four season tyres and would like opinions for the other ones available like the khumo solus, vredestein quatrac 3, Goodyear vector, handbook optimo etc..

Goodyear vector 4seasons, very good all round tyre.

Lack a little grip over +25c but still fine.  Great in snow and ice.

Have had two sets now on a 2WD to save buying a 4x4.

Hi Richard. What's the noise like with them as this is my daily skip..

Very slightly more noisy, but I only notice it when I listen for it.

Good thread, I too want an all-season tyre for the wife's Octavia Scout.

We run the factory standard Dunlop SP Sport 01 tyres and I'd been toying with the idea of getting some winter wheels and tyres.

As she only does 8,000 miles a year and barely see's 50mph I reckon she'd be better with a good quality all-season...

My other half runs full winters all year no problems at all (Goodyear ultra grip 8's ) . If you drive at UK speed limits and don't take corners like Vettel they're fine. Stunning on snow and ice of course!

For all of you who have been running winter tyres all year round..........Do they wear a lot in the higher temperatures of summer?

Nope

Popular missunderstanding that winters go soft in heat

The silicon compund  infact retains the same shore rating across a very wide temp range

They do not heat up and become 'sticky' like a summer tyre

'Silica Compound' of the Winter Cold weather tyres, that will be.

First 'Boing '4 *oC' Warning here this morning since about April.

I've just changed Dunlop SP01 on my Yeti for Goodyear Vector 4seasons. First impressions is that they are much quieter than the old Dunlops.

Ive had winters on my front since i bought the car and they were brand new 5k ago, worn out now nearly. Gislaved norfrost 5's

Really rated tyres apparently. Good grip in snow but worn out so quick

I leave my Vredestein Winters on all year round  on my Vitara. I have to admit I keep the mileage down on it during the warmer months (I'm lucky enough to have access to a second car) but the wear doesn't seem to be adversely affected. The handling and braking in warm weather is defiantly not as sharp as regular summer or all weather tyres, but I only use the car for shorter trips in order to keep it running sweetly and ready for the colder weather.

A colleague of mine runs a Disco 2 (big bus at 2.5 tonnes) and keeps his Vredestein Wintrac Extremes on all year round. He gets about 25K miles out of them which is about the same as all season tyres he reckons.

I wouldn't want to drive a lot on Winters in summer though, as they definitely don't perform as well as regular tyres, you really can feel the extra 'squidge' in them

Anyone used the khumo's or hankook's?

anyone?

I did ponder some tyres made by those two, but took a punt on Uniroyal MS plus 6 for my little van (citreon bingo)

This is their entry level winter tyre - same price range as khumo/hankook

Fingers crossed for a nice cold winter

Are winter tyres classed as a modification that you should inform your insurer about?

When I last bothered looking, the Goodyear, Hankook and Vredestein tyres topped the (mostly German) independent tests. They each have slightly different combinations of strengths. I'd suggest the Goodyear might be an easier choice if you don't have a proper spare, but if you do either of the other two might make more sense.

If you're prevaricating because you think you can get another brand cheaper, it might be worth comparing a number of online retailers as prices do vary, sometimes by quite a bit. I was recently looking at Camskill and mytyres, and found that one wasn't always cheaper than the other.

Ran those for quite a while on SWMBO's now departed Golf V. A very capable tyre that never let us down in the wet, dry, snow or ice. We're considering another set for the Yeti. It's either those or dedicated winter tyres on steelies :)

We went for the all season options due to capability and the fact my wife does minimal milage.

Yeti is 18 months old and it's nearly done 3,000 miles...

Might be an idea for me if I costed them against each other. :giggle:

I do 3K a quarter, Fabia's starting to look old now :(

YET1 does 3,000 mph :D

If I recall correctly from when this was discussed previously: The ABI said no, as long as the rolling circumference remains the same. (So you can have smaller wheels with larger profile tyres)

But even though the ABI said that it shouldn't, the advice is to check with your insurance company first, just in case.

Thanks fellas.

Hi,

Why don't you get them for your Octy? I have a set for winter for my Octy vRS. I was very impressed with them, combined with the ESP system. Worked very well on the untreated iced up back roads. Quite tricky to upset the car.

They have snowflake so not sure why you are not considering them?

As I said in the original post, I have experience of the kleber's so looking for real world opinions on the alternatives.. So at the moment it is between the goodyear vectors and the Kleber's and the kleber's are ahead on price.

I would think about going full winters year round but they don't do he speed rating of the four season tyres
