3rd Party Navigation add-on for Octavia 3

Featured Replies

I wouldn't bother.

Simply because:

1. You don't know who does the warranty if there are any problems with the unit.

2. How long does warranty last?

3. Who does & supplies the mapping for the unit?

4. Who does the fitment of the unit to the car?

5. Does the fitting of this unit affect the overall warranty of the car?

6. How much is it going to cost to have it fitted & coded to the car?

7. Does all of the functionality of the Columbus or Bolero unit transfer to this unit (Headlight adjustments etc)?

Personally if & that's a big if I was going to look at a 3rd party sat nav/infortainment unit, then I would look at Kenwood first, they maybe pricey, but you know who you're dealing with and what you're getting in warranty terms & who provides the mapping, Kenwood also does 3rd party fitments for VAG, however saying that I wouldn't bother with a built in sat nav unit, they're expensive to have & maintain as you could be looking at map updates every quarterly or half yearly and how much are you going to pay for those updates?

For the amount you intend to pay for that unit or any other built in unit, you could buy a top of the range TomTom, Garmin or Becker unit with free lifetime map updates & traffic included.

From my reading of it, it doesn't replace the standard headunit, it adds functionality to it. I did notice that it didn't give any information on the nav system itself though. It might be rubbish.

I'm not sure I'd be willing to risk £350 based on the information on the web page.

Exactly. As I've said I would rather spend a fraction of that on portable Sat Nav than take a chance.

Map updates for Amundsen and Columbus are free.

The mapping/software is iGo8. Seems fairly well established.

I see what you mean about warranty etc though.

I wonder if Kenwood will do another plug and play unit for the new MQB cars?

Free Sat Nav updates

If you currently own an Octavia model that is more than 3 years old you are entitled to free Sat Nav updates. So not for current models.

So you're agreeing or not?

Sorry, I don't agree with you when you say that the map updates are free for the Mk3 Octavia as it's a brand new model and so in a few months time when a map update is issued by Skoda you'll be obliged to pay for it.

I was under the impression map updates are free. Skoda provide the following instructions to update the Amundsen http://new.skoda-auto.com/SiteCollectionDocuments/download/maps-update/en/amundsen.pdf

It says go to http://www.navigation.com/skoda-cz and download them from the links provided there.

Are you saying this is somehow incorrect? Have Skoda made a mistake?

Well if it says you can then go for it.

I was just reading what it said about sat nav map updates here: http://www.skoda.co.uk/owners/caring-for-your-car

If it accepts it then fine, but don't be surprised if it doesn't work and at 15Gb it's going to take a considerable time (unless you have super high speed broadband) & amount of your download/usage allowance.

It's pretty explicit, it says "If you currently own an Octavia model that is more than 3 years old you are entitled to free Sat Nav updates. For more information about how to download these updates, please click here"

Why all the confusion and doubt? I think it's already been established on this site that map updates are free, you can either download them yourself or approach your dealer for assistance.

Sadly they don't fit - different shaped hole to every other bloomin' Škoda model :(

Nevermind.

You could give these a bell and ask when they can do Mk3's:  http://www.oemretrofits.co.uk

But what I'm trying to point out is that anyone who has a either an Amundsen and Columbus sat nav unit from the last 18 months to present isn't entitled to it as their vehicle isn't 36 months old.

I would be a tad wary of installing one of these in case it renders the unit unusable, also it may ask for a installation (licence code) to activate it, where would you get one & failure to input it will more than likely render the unit inoperable.

If you bother to click on Dodgy's "click here" link, you will find that it is updates for ALL owners of Amundsen & Columbus.

Latest updates are also quoted; "Last Update: June 2013; Next Update: November 2013"

Guess we could do with some clarity, I think there's a typo on the Skoda page. Why would they have an up to date link which is itself linked to from Skoda's site for older vehicles. I've seen it posted on here that people have downloaded the 15GB file referenced in the pages I linked to above and it all worked fine.

I would still urge caution, just in case it asks for a licencing code.

Although why bother now when you'd be doing another 15Gb (possibly more) in just over a months time.

I'm going to be quite happy with my trusty Garmin which has got me out of trouble on a few occasions recently when there's been problems on the road ahead.

Anyway, just out of curiosity what does it cost to have a new Columbus unit (like the one fitted to the Mk3) retrofitted to the car, just in case I decide I'd like one later on?

Yes, we should urge caution and ignore all Skoda documentation ;)
