Insurance Help

Hi All

Its insurance renewal time, in October 2010 i had a minor claim on my insurance, just doing a few insurance quotes and it asking 'in the past 5 years have you had any claims?'

Im sure it was after 3 years your didt have to declare them? I know its still 5 years for points and fines ect

Can someone clear this up for me

You're forming a "contract of great good faith" when you "buy" motor insurance. Not only are the insurers entitled to ask any questions that they like and impose any conditions they want, but if you lie and get caught then the insurer is entitled to invalidate your policy, and refuse to pay on any claim you might have made during the term.

Quite straight forward,

If you want quotes from companies that only want to know the past 3 years, then use those brokers or comparison sites,

you are using or trying for quotes where they are asking 5 years.

As it is they have access to the information on your history of claims, that will even include Windscreen damage claims.

One helpful Broker pointed out to me i had forgotten to mention a recent enough, Windscreen Claim. One more than i remembered i had claimed for.

(which to me is is better than those that like to accept your Declaration which you thought was fully truthful,

with them knowing it could catch you out down the line.)

No i understand that completely but on an insurance comparison site they ask in the past 5 years but the insurance company on the phone only ask for 3 years.

I cant compared prices if the information is wrong, if it only valid for 3 years then i don't have to declare it for 5

I thought there was a general rule of thumb, 3 year to declare for claims and 5 years for points

Most companies I've used ask for 5 year history. Either way the information is correct, they're just asking two different question

The Comparison site has Companies and underwritters that accept 3 years back declarations, but also ones that want 5 years declaration.

Until they run your information, then the general information is the one being acted on.

No harm in Declaring the 5 Years is there,

the company might not charge more anyway.

General Rule of thumb is surely to get the best cover for the best price and be sure that cover is there if ever needed.

Lots of good Insurance Brokers on this site & advice in the Insurance Section.

Phone calls, knowledgeable people and real prices.

Each insurance company can decide to attach terms as they see fit, so can ask you about the last 5 years to build up a picture of what kind of driver you are if they like.

I would agree about the "general rule of thumb", but insurance is changing and companies are trying to come up with different ways to be competative with their prices so we are seeing a shift away from some more traditional methods and ideas.

Jane_i10,

Maybe comparison sites are not the best way to get proper cover & competitive prices for business usage.?

When using Comparison sites, you might find the best price at 4 am in the morning, Monday Bank Holiday etc.

When a Company wants up the top 5 on the site, want sales etc,

surprising prices can arrive on screen, Buy now,

that when you call them, or someone calls you get that honoured.

Also calls come in from some crazies and offers or connected to Adrian Flux or the likes, you waste going through the stuff all over again and some mental price double the low quotes then comes. Or they even decline you cover.

**Note that Adrian Flux, or who ever is responsible for that. at AF**

Well, Google was useless. I got 3 hits, 2 of them mine and the 3rd relates to US Health Insurance.

Thanks that makes more sense

Im going with Admiral (multi car) as they have offered a very good price but they only asked for 3 years and others asked for 5 i just there was one rule for all.

My claim is one month from coming off (for 3 years) so ill just wait for another month, uninsure and insure once its come off. Its my second car so no real need for it aTM

Can you get your NCB matched on the second car and bring the price of the policy down, along with limited annual mileage.

george

They make up thier own conditions and questions.

And you must answer what they ask.

Some even want to know if you have been on a  speed awareness course as well as points and convictions.

A claim three years ago should not effect the price too much so do not rule out insurers just because they ask for claims within 5 years.  Don't forget to try the Briskoda Insurers for a comparison!
