Washer Problem

Featured Replies

Dear all,

I have a Octy Mk1 1.9TDi 130 Elegance Estate with the 5.5 litre washer fluid reservoir/bottle. Had a slow leak so tried to remove the bottle to inspect. Moved the radiator fluid reservoir, power steering reservoir, diesel filter out of the way but because this 5.5L bottle goes out into the wing, I couldn't move it at all, there wasn't enough room to pull it out.

So I disconnected the electrical connections to the two washer pumps and pulled them out from their grommets and reseated them. Looked like the back one (which actually feeds the front windscreen and headlamps) might have been a bit loose and was probably the cause of the slow leak, because on pushing it back in, it seems to have stopped the leak.

The bad news is that since doing this, having disconnected and reconnected the electrical connections to the individual pumps, when I operate the washers no water comes out. There's a very quiet single tick that can be heard from both pumps when you operate the stalk, and I've tested the electrics - both connectors are getting their volts ok. But neither washer pump is actually whirring and sending water out into the pipework.

Could it be that the pipes are blocked around the pumps in the reservoir?

Although the reservoir was near enough dry for a couple of weeks before I could investigate the leak, we didn't operate the washers, and it would seem too much of a coincidence that both motors would have seized or burnt out at exactly the same time for neither of them to work.

I don't think it's a fuse problem because I can't detect a blown one and the connectors are delivering power to the pumps.

Any ideas if there's anything I can try next before having to get someone to have a look at it or change the washer pumps?

Thanks

Lawrence
