Paint stripper whats good?

Featured Replies

Guys i need to know if there is a good paint stripper out there available to the public to buy? I have tried nitro mors but the stuff is crap and didnt work.

What paint are you trying to strip, and from what?

If trying it on a good quality 2K polyurethane compound for instance, you will need a decent phenol based stripper. Which isn't available to consumers.

Exactly - There even are (or were; one variety may have been for polyurethane) several varieties of Nitromors for different paint chemistries.

Looking to stripp my alloys as i want to polish them up.

Get them acid dipped!

There must be someone around Portsmouth that does it due to the naval base and other maritime businesses in the area!

Just had a look on google....try the strip joint at 245 goldsmith ave, outside Fratton stn!

I've phoned them already and they can do wheels!

Pop them down there and see what they say! ;-)

try the strip joint

:D  Is this a new sideline offered when times are tough for lapdances?

Alloys are stove enameled, not painted. It's no wonder Nitromors wouldn't touch them.

You need either acid dipping or bead blasting services to strip them back, and if you want to polish them I'd suggest bead blasting since that will remove small irregularities.

Blimey cheers for all the info guys really appriciate it.

You could try caustic soda but its nasty if you get it on yourself.

The acid baths that you refer to ARE phenol based strippers.

The best commercially available product is probably Paramose, which can be legally washed down soil drains I believe. Failing that, it's gotta be nasty stuff.

As for bead blasting,

Prunus shell media is great for removing the paint without affecting the surface, but really, alloys get snotty and corroded so you will want one of the finer grades of glass bead to do this and still leave a reasonable surface finish. Too fine and it won't sufficiently smooth things out though. Can't remember exactly what grade I used to use at the airport, too many years have passed. :(

Agreed; this, and th cost of the blaster, are why most people pay to get this sort fo work done by a specialist.

Was really hoping there would be something i could brush on at home without removing the tyres due to the timescale and needing to drive the car every day. Sounds like i might be out of luck though?

Without removing the tyres?

Seriously, I wouldn't bother. You're only likely to upset the seal at the bead, and then your tyres will start to creep down in pressure, and the wheels will corrode more than they are already.

Best to either do it properly, or leave it until there is a problem.

Well after sanding off the top few coats of paint down to what i think is the primer, i chuckhed a load more nitro mors over my spare wheel and its actually started to work! So gonna just keep going until its completely stripped and then polish it up, if it looks pap I'll just respray it.

Should do just fine. Might be worthwhile using a spray etch primer if you want to do a real lasting job on it.

Sorry.
