Is anyone with 1.4 TSI DSG?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Can you please share your experience if there is anyone with 1.4 TSI DSG?

I am wondering about consumption figures, about the 7 speed DSG combination with 1.4 TSI engine.

I have heard that 7 speed DSG is more jerky, and not so soft than the 6 speed DSG with wet oil clutch system.

Does it have the sailing function similar to 6 speed version, or is related with Mode Selection option?

Any info is appreciated with 1,4 TSI combined with DSG.

Well have it in my Fabia VRS of course and had a 7 speed in a 1.8 TSI.  Had the six speed wet gearbox in a Skoda and a SEAT.  7 speed seems quicker to react but then it is usually paired to a petrol engine whereas the 6 speed is usually paired to a wiesel.  More gears the better.  Next generation boxes will have between 8 and 10 gears it looks like.  Seven speed box seems to improve fuel consumption by 1 or 2 MPG over manual where as 6 speed wet decreased MPG by one or two MPG.  7 speed dry needs no servicing and should last a couple of hundred thousand miles.  Wet one need servicing every £40K ie oil change costing up to £100.

Both DSGs boxes can get confused if you manually intervene during its logic process ie go to Tiptronic by pushing to the left when in Drive or using paddles just as it was doing something.  I almost use the paddles and tiptronic as much as I would a manual when getting a hurry on ie put in to sport mode when approaching a junction or roundabout.  In the case of the 1.4 DSG Octy 3, as it puts the car in the £30 road tax and the manual is over £100 and it help fuel economy by a couple of MPG it is an easy decision to go for the DSG over manual.

Box is not perfect but is miles better than manual if you are doing huge miles as I do.  Standing starts are tough to get optimum but the TSI have so much torque from low down and revs cleanly so high it is a great combo with the 7 speed DSG.  Takes months or years to get the very best out of the combo but such an advancement over manual and I prefer it to the 6 speed but then that box probably suits the diesel better and the 7 speed suits the petrol better, shame they do not do a 380 Nm version to go in the petrol VRS and with 8 gears as that is the norm for BMW, JAG etc now but the 1.4 TSI 140 hp DSG stands out to me in the Octy 3 range and may well be my next car (Cylinder De-activation would be nice to push it over 60 mpg though and VAT Free deal please).

7 speed DSG does have 'sailing', AKA coasting, function.

This is active when the car is in Eco driving mode.

When coasting ECO is displayed on Maxidot.

I am currently in a 1.4 DSG (122 ps) rapid as a loaner until my car arrives.

Pros -

It's quiet

Smooth like butter gear changes

Cons -

There is a bit of a "loose" roll before reverse gear engages

Seems to have a bit of a turbo lag

Not the best fuel economy - I drive RT about 65/70 miles of mostly A-Roads and MWays and I'm only getting 35 avg MPG. This is with very conservative driving. Obviously it will loosen up a bit but makes me want to get into my Diesel even more!!

To avoid the reverse lag select it then, very gently release the brake, anyway what's the hurry when you're reversing?

The 1.4tsi in the Octavia should be a completely new engine compared to the one in the Rapid and previous generation Octavia.

The "lag" into reverse might be because the reverse gear is on the same half of the gearbox as 1st gear; so it needs to de-select 1st before it can go into reverse.  I have to confess to a bad habit; on slow speed manoeuvring (like getting out of car park spaces etc), the lever is in the opposite drive direction before I've fully come to a stop (bad habit from "conventional" auto days).  It sometimes doesn't like that...and won't start to engage the other drive direction until you've slowed to almost stationary.

My next steed will be either a DSG7 or a ZF 8-speed Auto though if at all possible.  That probably means an Octavia (1.4 - with ACT if they bring it out - Golf GT if not) or a 1-series (116i or 118i probably).  Autos all the way for me; makes no difference when batting down a motorway, but a real boon in town traffic.

What does the 1.4 TSI 140 hp rev to, 6500 or 7000 rpm or other?

Well - I picked up our 1.4 TSI 140 PS with DSG on thursday, and have driven it ca 400 km's so far. I have allmost four years of experience with the previous generation 1.4 TSI with DSG, and I assume the gearbox is the same.

Fuel consumption is so far lower than our previous car, despite that the new one hasn't even been thoroughly broken in yet. I even keep it in sport mode most of the time as well, and yesterday we averaged 5,8 l per 100 km after at 150 km drive. That is quite decent, taking into account that I don't drive very economical.

DSG or manual? Definitely DSG.

What does the 1.4 TSI 140 hp rev to, 6500 or 7000 rpm or other? (ie where is the partial/full readline?)

Max power (according to the brochure) is achieved (and a plateau?) 4500-6000rpm so i'd expect a redline of probably 6500?

I've done one full kick-down so far (I try to keep it at a minimum as the car hasn't been broken in yet), and if I'm not totally mistaken, I think it rev's up to nearly 7K.

Anybody got a picture of the 1.4 TSI (DSG) rev counter??

Or anybody got a torque/power against revs curve plot for the rev range???

I was mistaken before. In normal mode the car revs up to just over 6 K. The redline starts at 6,5 K.

Thanks, just curious as the 1.4 twincharge red line is 7K as was my old 1.8 TSI, be interesting to know what the new 1.8 TSI revs to.
